I played the Ocean Course in March 1997. I got on as a single and was happy to be assigned to a retired couple who played from the forward tees. Being an 18 or 20 HDCP at the time, I was happy to play from those tees. I knew the course would beat me up, so I thought I would minimize the damage and maximize the fun. On the final green I made my putt for 99 and was a happy guy.
The early-morning fog made the course seem other-worldly. The fog burned off and gave way to a beautiful day... until the winds came up. Geez, it was difficult under windy conditions, at least for me. It was really difficult to aim at the left rough to compensate for a strong L-to-R wind (or vice versa). On one hole I hit a good drive that happened to bore through the crosswind and land right in the waste area I'd been aiming at. I was often unsure of what to do.
I didn't have any
disastrous holes; the course takes a stroke here, a stroke there, and before you know it, you're on your way to a higher score than you're used to shooting.
But I didn't mind because it was such a beautiful course. I kept thinking how easy it would be to make a photo calendar of the place, just by shooting at random. Everywhere you look it's pretty.
Have fun! I know you will.
