Looks like me and a couple of other new golfers will make our first annual suare' to Myrtle Beach towards the end of October/first of November. Planning on staying 5 days and playing 27 holes per day. Can anyone give us any idea on what the weather is like in Myrtle that time of year? (Is this still shorts weather or has fall come yet around that time?)
Also, our desired play list includes: Man 'O War, The Witch, Grande Dunes, Sea Trail, and True Blue. We are all new golfers (i.e. been playing 6 months to 18 months) and are high handicappers (for now). Are any of these courses either overrated or MUCH too difficult for novices? If so, give us more appropriate choices.
Where's your preferred place to stay when you are at Myrtle?
When I go in Feb, we get a week package deal and we stay at the Ocean Dunes / Ocean Sands condo's down on the beach. We mix a couple courses up every year, but we usually play Oyster Bay, Crow Creek, Shaftsbury Glen, Myrtle Beach National, Beechwood, The Granddaddy, and a few others. I enjoy all of the courses we play, but unfortunately my Uncle who set's the whole thing up every year, is an old guy who doesn't like to deviate much from the norm, so we play a lot of the same places every year.
As for the weather when you're going, it should be nice. It should be starting to cool down and you probably won't be getting the usual afternoon thundershowers. I'd still bring the rain gear though, because you never know down there.
You've selected some nice courses to play, especially True Blue and Grande Dunes. The weather will be nice, maybe a bit fresh in the morning but will warm up nicely throughtout the day. Myrtlewood Golf Villas is a nice central location, close to restaurants, nightlife and beach. If you're looking for oceanfront, then try The Caravelle Resort. Have a great trip!
Been there 2 times in October......one year temps were in the 90's, broke day temp records 4 out of 7 days. Another year, first 3 days in the low 80's then a front came thru and temp never got higher than mid 60's.
October is also the 2nd highest month for hurricanes in that area. Never seen one both times.
We go every year in July, so I can't comment on the weather for the time of year you're going.
I'll tell you that Grande Dunes is one of the nicest that I've played down there. It wont be to much for you guys if you play the right set of tees. If you don't, it might be a little overwhelming for newer golfers, but they have 6 sets of tees, so to accomidate everyone. This year when we played, starter said the back tees for that day for 8000 yards (we didn't play them) lol. The next tees up were 7500 yards, and then next set (ones we played) were 7200. So it can be a very long course! Aside from that, you get the star treatment there. Pull up and they grab your clubs from you (as they always do at nicer courses), you get free range balls while you're waiting to tee off, they clean your clubs after the round, so it's prety nice!
Sea Trail is usually nice. We played the Byrd course this year and it was okay. Sea Trail isn't a course like Grande Dunes where it's SUPER NICE, but it's always in good shape and never have had problems with it.
The others I've never played, but I'm sure they are nice. There isn't to many down there, not nice.
I cant tell you where to play or stay, but there is this great bar there. If I remember right, they only serve Natty Light beer!! Of course, I dont remember what it is called, and I really dont remember the night, so they might actually serve more than Natty light.... and to be honest, i cant remember why it was a good idea to go there! Myrtle Beach is a blast, have fun!
Weve gone down the past two years in July and it was quite warm then. But I think it would be comfortable in Oct/Nov. We played True Blue this past summer and for a high handicap I would say it would not be to your liking. One we did play that I thought was a course a high handicaper could shoot decent on is Blackmoor. Kings North is a nice course to play too. If you want to play 27 different holes you could hit World Tour. They have 27 duplicated holes from around the world. You will get mixed opinions about World Tour on here but you will just have to play it and decide for yourself. Oh yeah and as far as where we stay . We have stayed at Breakers Resort (Paradise Tower) for the past few years.
