Review: River Club: South Myrtle

Just got back from an almost perfect weekend trip to Myrtle Beach. I am going to break it down by course and try to give an informative review. Please bear with me, as some how, some way, I lost my Digital Camera and I am waiting to post the pics to this review later(getting some from friends)

Course: The River Club

Web Site: River Club - Pawleys Island Golf Course

Date/Time Played: 4 Tee Times at 8:31 am June 2nd (16 people)

Club House and Staff:

Nice club house, and once again, very friendly staff.

The Course:

When we have booked in years past, we had been going with value and lessor courses at Myrtle. In Va. Beach, VA, even Myrtle's lower end is usually way above 80% of the dog tracks we have here. I booked this years trip with high mid-range courses, or at least I was led to believe that. Now, it was just starting to sprinkle in the morning, but the course was very, very wet from watering it I assume. Makes me believe drainage is a problem here. Good news, green were very nice and in great shape, and the cart girl had a full bar. Bad New, the fairways were brown and inspired a "Gray Hound Race" image in everyone. The layout was nice, water in play on 15 of 18 holes, but man, the course look like it was in horrible shape.

Pictures: a couple coming soon

Finial Thoughts:

Great layout falls victim to bad grounds keeping I assume, and drainage. Very nice and coutious staff, but we won't be coming back.

Just 2 pics, the rain was coming in, and the course was in bad shape, a must not play!

Island Green, great layout, just bad shape on this course:

My first one flew the island, my "muligan" is in the hole....no bunker!

Re: Review: River Club: South Myrtle

John,

I played River Club last year. The course was in better shape last year, but it was soggy for us as well. I have to agree that there must be some drainage issues on it. Overall, the course design wasn't bad and it did have a lot of water. If you go back, I would highly recommend True Blue or Caledonia. Those are two of my favorite courses down there.

Tim
