Correct me if I'm wrong, but this guy won the Heisman last year(before Leinart), played for a National Title, didn't get drafted, and didn't get signed as a Free Agent. I just heard on the Dan Patrick show that he'd got a try out with KC, but I still for the fellow...I can't understand it...Even Matt Leinart's back-up got drafted...This guy didn't see the field for 4 years at USC, yet he gets drafted over a Heisman winner? That blows my mind...
P.S. Sorry for the not-so-interesting posts over the past few days, I just need some form of entertainment...
He didn't have an NFL arm. At least that's what I remember the word on him being. The ball seemed to take a lot of time to get to his receivers the couple of times I watched him. I don't know where he is now.

He is now on his way to try out with the Chiefs, or at least that's what he said on the radio...The only prob I ever knew about him was his knees(both operated on), but he was a winner...Minus that USC shalacking...

That doesn't necessarily translate into NFL QB ability. There are probably at least a dozen Heisman-winning QBs alone that never cut it in the pros. In college there are so many teams that just "out-athlete" their opponents, QBs on great teams are used to throwing to wide open receivers. In the NFL they have to zip it into tight coverage.... unless they're playing the Lions.

Very true, and I can think of several right off hand that fit into this category...But, I do think he had a shot to be an NFL qb...I didn't feel like some of these qb's that have came out in recent years are as good, talent wise as White. I am very objective on this subject, as I cheer for the SEC, as opposed to White's Big XII, but I think he had the tools to survive, and I wish him luck this weekend...Take Phillip Rivers for example: Good qb, had some great wr's at NC St, has terrible mechanics, but still got a shot. He's currently sitting the bench behind Drew Brees in SD, but he's there...Although I can remember a lot of Heisman winners being busts in the NFL, only Charlie Ward and Eric Crouch come to mind when it comes to never getting a 'real' shot at making it...

Your right and Ward only because he took the basketball option, when he wasn't a high pick. White could still get a shot, it seems like everyone else does.

Haven't the Lions ended up with a large number of these "can't make it anywhere else" Heisman trophy quarterbacks?

We had Detmer for a while and who can ever forget the legendary Andre Ware ? One of my friends here at work still argues that Ware could've been a good NFL QB if Wayne Fontes hadn't ruined him with that QB merry-go-round we had here back in the early 90s. He's a reasonably intelligent fellow otherwise.

If you ask me, I don't think under any circumstances, qb merry-go-round or not, was Andre Ware going to be a good qb in the pro's...I think he was a great athlete, but he lacked the mental part of game...The pace is totally different from college...What about Harrington? When yall gonna run him out?

The same can't be said for Ware. My Lions insider said that the reason Ware never made it was because, although he had all the physical tools, he was as dumb as a box of rocks. The run-n-shoot offense in Houston made it easy for him to make plays but he couldn't remember the play book or remember defensive keys. He was strictly playground material.
Didn't Gino Torretta get a look here in Detroit too?
Ryan Leaf, Andre Ware, Drew Brees (this is his his second chance, and he is doing well) Todd Maranivich, Art Schlister (SP), Brian Greise (he one one good year when Terrell Davis carried him), Kordell Stewart.
These guys weren't necessarily Heisman winners, but probably had higher expectations than White, and they were huge busts.
Bama, I'm glad you are not necessarily an OU fan, because since I am an Ohio State Fan, I have to mention that Craig Krenzel of the mighty Natl Champ Buckeyes got drafted!!!!!
White does have those bad knees, a little slow for the NFL, and would probably need to bulk up about 30 pounds.
What about Harrington? When yall gonna run him out?
It's put up or shut up time for him NOW with Mike & Roy Williams and Charles Rogers at WR, Sledge & Kevin Jones in the backfield and Garcia on the bench, I suspect that Mooch will have a very quick hook this year.
Personally, I don't think he'll make it 6 weeks into the season, but I could be wrong...I do think with a good qb, the Lions could be a very entertaining offense to watch...

We'll see. I've been a Joey supporter. He's never had a running game until about 5 games into the season last year and by then both Rogers and Williams were hurt, so he's never really had any decent receivers either. There are some here saying he may not get past the 1st couple of games if he gets off to a slow start. If they start off losing Joey's the last thing between Mooch and the axe.

I think the Lions need to start looking at Pistons games for their next QB. I mean, the three-row beer cup toss right to Artest's forehead? Quarters from who knows where hitting Iverson? They may not be able to read a zone blitz, but the accuracy is second to none!
