I am a very casual football fan...my office recently started a league of which I am a member...it's my first time doing the whole fantasy football thing. Any pointers to help me stay away from becoming the laughing stock of the league?
How many teams are in the league, how is the draft order determined, and how are points determined? The answers to these can help us determine for you a plan of attack.
Big Ben needs Hines, let's face it....I'm not feeling cozy about the RB situation either, perhaps it will be the reverse this year, Duce down early and the Bus takes the load, and then can rest down the stretch...while Duce takes most of the snaps from October on...
Depending on how your draft works...pick runing backs first. They are the big point winners. Get a QB after you get two good RB's.
I think he's talking about what you'd call Soccer in the initial post.
Football is played with round balls & Rugby with oval ones.... its quite easy to comprehend really.
Anyhow,.... Basically to answer the initial question, make sure you've chosen a decent goal keeper. the usual rule is only one player from a particular premiere club is allowed in your teem, there will be a limit to how much you spend on the team. Its more useful having defenders who can score, as this is worth more points, but also have a decent striker who can keep getting those goals throughout the season. If it were me, I'd choose one decent striker, then look at your mid field & defenders, making sure you've picked at least half capable of scoring in their own right, then just use up whatever available funds to waste on a cheap but reasonable striker & the other half of your team. Its not as easy as it sounds.
Though I'm waiting for Fantasy Golf, where we pick our own Ryder cup style team...lol
Yeah, Ben isn't a great stat QB. How about the Bus? In one game last year he had 5 carries for 2 yards, and 3 TD's.
The Steeler faithful hope this year their #1 pick, tight end - Miller from VA, will actually get passes thrown his way, which will add a pass catching position for them. All of last year their TE's had 22 receptions. Without Ward, they need someone to pick up receiving production.

A friend of mine used to run a fantasy golf league. I think he just used the format from ESPN.
The last year he did it, we had to pick 12 players, and we had $17 million to spend. The cost of a player was what they earned the prior year. The key is that you must have 12 players on your roster. So, if someone took Tiger, VJ and Phil, that would have been approximately $12 million, which would then leave $5 milion to buy 9 players.
The strategy was to either take several top players and a bunch of no names that made $200,000 the prior year. Or, take one or two top earners and more second tier guys like Furyk, Weir, or whomever.
He had the pool automated where his spreadsheet would pull the weekly data from the PGA website. Pretty cool.
Definitely spending wisely in auction leagues can be tricky....FF league that I belonged to has a serpentine order to it, first guy of a 12 team league got the 24 pick and 25 pick...so better make No. 1 count, 12 team had the 1st pick 2nd round, etc...
It was funny because one year (1994) I had picked in the first round Sterling Sharpe (18 TD's), I think I was 10th and the 2 guys after me let Brett Favre (33 TD's) go that year, I took him on the way back and cleaned up that year, Superbowl and all....it was a breakout year for both players.

I picked up Ben as a free agent in the middle of the season. I played him a few weeks, but he wasn't a big point producer.
I played Bulger most. He did okay, but not nearly as well as Culpepper, McNabb, or Manning for points. I was playing Bulger and Holt often. Holt didn't do nearly as well point-wise as he was expected to do.
I also picked up Volek as a free agent. I played him and Bennet that Monday Night when Bennet got all of those yards and TD's hehe. That was an unreal game for me. I had the high score that week.
I tried playing Volek and Bennet a couple of other times, but it was a bust.
Last year was my first to play fantasy football. I played in a league at work. Considering I recently resigned I don't think I'll be playing in that league again!
I tried to join the league here, but when I went to register my team the league was full.
I started my own league for my Web site. There are only three players so far. The draft is August 31st and 12:30pm MST live on the Yahoo! site. Anyone that wants to play in this league can just PM or email me and I will send the info to join.
