David Beckham has signed a $250 million 5 year deal with Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS. Apparently we have a professional soccer league here in the US.... who knew Beckham's deal is thought to be the biggest in sporting history. "David Beckham is a global sports icon who will transcend the sport of soccer in America," MLS commissioner Don Garber said. Well for $250 million he should, as there is not much here sports-wise that doesn't "transcend the sport of soccer in America".

There is no athlete on the planet worth $50 million a year. But if somebody is crazy enough to pay them you can't argue with them taking the money.
He's going to make more than the league generates in revenue (LOL!)! I appreciate where MLS is going, pulling the old Pele trick and taking an international great to try to breathe life into a weak league. People recognized the Cosmos when Pele came to the US, but the league withered on the vine and dissolved. I think Beckham will be CPR for MLS, but unless they also go out and get Zidane and Ronaldinho to create matchups, it won't be terribly interesting and will befall the same fate as the old league.
The LA Galaxy are owned by a big International co. (AEG).........but the stadium holds only 27,000 seats. What do you think ticket prices would be to pay that 50M a year ?????
Interesting but not suprising move...removed from the English team and retired from the captaincy, benched at Real Madrid and now told that there will be no contract renewal, he was going somewhere and considering his off field marketing, LA or NY are natural fits for him...good for him and I hope he does raise the profile of the game in the states, but like others have said, NASL used to be a retirement ground for many of the world's best...I met an overweight Johan Cryuff smoking a cigarette outside of a game in DC when I was 8 or 9...not the hero that I imagined...
250 million is unbelievable. I don't even know why he would want to come to the U.S., the premier players aren't playing in this country.
As TO's publicist would say, there are $250 million reasons why he'd want to come to the US....and that's assuming those are ALL his endorsements wrapped up in that bundle.
Good luck to him getting such an obscene amount of money however please spare us the sermon about helping the children ...what a load of self serving **. I would have more respect for him if he said someone is paying me $250,000,000 to work and live in Bevely Hills for 5 years who wouldn't do it.
