NFL Week 6

Just looking over the games for this weekend, thinking about my picks for the office pool. Just a few wise-cracking comments from an idiot observer:

Miami (0-5) at Buffalo (0-4): Hopefully one of these teams will be able to score enough to get its first win of the year.

Washington (1-4) at Chicago (1-3): At least these teams have shown they can win. Once, anyway. We'll see which QB hurts his team the least.

Cincinnati (1-3) at Cleveland (2-3): The Buckeye State square-off is yet another (see above) match-up of PowerRanking-challenged teams. Could see some good running plays, given the shape of the run defenses that the offenses will be attacking.

Green Bay (1-3) at Detroit (3-1): I'd never have guessed that these teams would have the records they have at this point. Should be a great game!

Seattle (3-1) at New England (4-0): Can the Seahawks go to Foxboro and stop the Patriots streak? Yeah, right.

San Francisco (1-4) at New York Jets (4-0): Could get ugly.

Carolina (1-3) at Philadelphia (4-0): See above.

Minnesota (3-1) at New Orleans (2-3): Should get ugly, but won't. Vikes will find a way to keep the Saints hanging around.

Other games: I've exhausted my limited store of commentary. Your ideas?

I kind of backed into a "picks competition" with another guy that has a personal website. I had thought of doing NFL picks for fun, and when I saw he was doing them, I challenged him. Now I'm busy playing catch-up! *laugh* Anyway, you wanted my thoughts/ideas? Here ya go! (courtesy haveyoumettony.com ):

Washington at CHICAGO - Bad home teams beat bad road teams. Though there's no reason the Redskins should be this bad. And not to say Joe Gibbs' coaching methods are outdated, but once they figure out this new-fangled forward pass thingy, they should be just fine.

Miami at BUFFALO - (see above) One of these weeks, Miami will win a game, and the 1977 Buccaneers will drink champagne in celebration.

San Diego at ATLANTA - The Chargers have bitten me each of the past two weeks, so its tough to go against them, but I'd be afraid of (an angry) Michael Vick, and he should be just that after the egg they laid last week.

Houston at TENNESSEE - Houston is NOT Green Bay. Lucky for them. But the old Oilers beat the new Oilers by 10.

Carolina at PHILADELPHIA - Some article I was reading online this afternoon that Terrell Owens should be MVP because he's got the Eagles off to such a great start. The Eagles ALWAYS get off to a great start. Then once the calendar changes, they turtle. They're like the Browns of the late 80's, just not nearly as fashionable. (On a side note, if the Panthers were the Ravens, I'd look for a big week out of Rae Carruth this Sunday.)

San Francisco at NY JETS - (Edited for Golf Rewind friendliness. )

Seattle at NEW ENGLAND - Seattle's a good team when they show up for 60 minutes. Last week they didn't, this week it won't matter. Besides, with the (way the Red Sox have been playing), SOMEONE has to win to keep the chowds off the window ledge.

Kansas City at JACKSONVILLE - KC might win this if Priest Holmes remembers why he's a near unanimous #1 fantasy draft pick. And if Trent Green forgets that he's Trent Green.

Green Bay at DETROIT - There's no reason to think Detroit should win this game. At all. Then again, this isn't two years ago, and Green Bay just embarrassed themselves on Monday night. No cheese for you!

Cincinnati at CLEVELAND - Thank God for those Redskins-Bears and Dolphins-Bills matchups. They make this one look like the Super Bowl. Or at least a playoff game. Okay, a meaningful December game at least.

Denver at OAKLAND - True the Raiders went home from Indy with their spikey shoulder pads wedged in their (ears), but in this rivalry, you throw the records out the window. Of course, Denver has more wins to throw out said window, but I still think the Silver and Black get it done.

PITTSBURGH at Dallas - Please let this Pittsburgh roll stop. Please!

MINNESOTA at New Orleans - Its a dome away from dome game for the Vikings. Aaron Brooks will throw 3 TD's for the Saints, but he'll also throw 3 picks and make me wonder why I put him on my fantasy roster year in and year out.

Tampa Bay at ST. LOUIS - One of these weeks, Tampa Bay is going to win a game and the 1977 Buccaneers are going to pop open the champagne to celebrate.

(Editor's Note: Some comments amended so the moderators don't wash my cybermouth out with cybersoap! )

Great stuff, tonyg; thanks. Actually helped me think about some of the tougher picks I have to make this week. (Will you reimburse me if I don't win the pool?)

Appreciate how you "adapted" your material for GolfRewind purposes. I'm not surprised that SF-at-NYJets is the game that needed complete editing!

Thanks Jim! There will be no reimbursement, however. When you pick as poorly as I do, there are no guarantees! *laugh*

And I just copied and pasted that in, then remembered about you mean old mods and your family values!! *grin*

Well, it looks like everyone here thinks the 49ers are going to get clobbered by the Jets. As a huge 49er fan, I don't disagree with you. I just want to chime in with my displeasure for the management there.

I became a fan of the 49ers back when they had Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott, etc. It's when I started following pro football and the 49ers were good then. Hawaii residents have the luxury of choosing who they want to cheer for as we don't have any pro teams of our own. In any case, that was in the 80's and I'm still a 49er fan to this day.

Anyway, the downfall of the 49ers isn't the players fault. The management has just been terrible. After the salary cap fiasco of the late '90's and the retirement of Steve Young, they went through a rebuilding phase. I was actually surprised that the team returned to the playoffs so quickly. Part of it was due to the draft brilliance of Bill Walsh but finding a QB like Jeff Garcia who could continue the line of 49er QB's.

Now, the team is rebuilding again. I know every team has to rebuild every once in a while but we just did that 5 years ago! We had a good coach in Mariucci, who's doing well in Detroit this year, but he got fired after going to the playoffs! I believe part of the reason he got fired was because of the tension between he and Terrell Owens. Well, TO's not on the team anymore. Then, they were in search of a new coach before last season and had one right under their nose. Jim Mora, Jr. He did such a great job developing players on the defensive side during the first rebuilding phase that I didn't understand why they didn't hire him. Now, he's with the Falcons.

I just don't have much optimism for the future of this team as long as John York is managing the team. I think Bill Walsh is retired now so we can't rely on him to work his draft brilliance anymore. We had a lot of bright young coaches and now they're all on successful NFL franchises. It's truly a sad decline for a proud franchise.

Anyway, I'm sorry if the most of you don't care about the 49ers but I just had to vent off some of my thoughts regarding the franchise.

As a resident of western Pennsylvania, I just hope my Cowboys don't get embarrassed too badly by the Steelers so I can at least save face. I don't know how I could face my Steeler fan friends if they go into Texas Stadium and lay a whoopin' on 'em...
