Just a question on this one - when Annika played the Colonial, did she play from the Championship tees (not the men's tees, which at Tour courses tend to be well forward of the tournament tees)?
I personally think that if Annika/Wie want to and are able to qualify to play in PGA events or indeed Majors, all power to them, but they should not get any breaks in competition, such as having 50 yards taken off the hole.
All ladies competing in Tour events have played from the same tees, and would do so in any future Tour events.
Open courses tend to favour shot makers rather than power players and have higher rewards for controling the ball in the wind. This tends to help ladies compete on skill rather than power.
Unforunately, too many Open courses are men only, so they would have to change in the car park!

I only ask because the papers this morning have been mentioning that women play from forward tees.
Although Open courses as you say favour shotmakers, they are still 800+ longer than the courses the lady pros play on their tour. No matter how good their finesse game is (and Annika had plenty of chances to show it at the Colonial ) they are still going to struggle.
Agreed, as they will be hitting 4 irons where the men are hitting 9 or wedge.
What suprised everyone when Annika played the Colonial was how much she struggled from 100 yards in. Logically she should be able to compete at that distance, but her short game was way below expectations.
Even on the LPGA tour now, on courses that max at 6500ish yds, the ladies are hitting 3 woods TO LAY UP on par 5's. Michelle Wie has the potential to be as long as many of the men, but she would still need to be pretty much as straight as Fred funk to compete. But if she or anyone else want to try to qualify in the same way as the men do, go for it.
I believe there should be no restriction on what sex a player is as well & you never know, maybe one day a woman will qualify. To do that they must be a lot more dedicated in their short game. Michelle Wie should get Dave Pelz to teach her how to chip & putt! She is horrible in these areas compared to the average PGA regular.
If the Open courses favor shot making....and I do believe that that they are a hard set up...Cory Pavin would be winning in the Open's. The game now is power the ball and let your short game get you out of the ruff on the green.

I think St. Andrews will show the rest of the non-believers that you're right. The pros will bomb the old girl into oblivion if the weather doesn't stop them.
Women able to play in the Open Championship. What is this world coming to? Alan Robertson and Old Tom Morris are rolling over in their graves. And by the way, if they can play in men's tournaments (fair play right???) I want to see Sergio, Hank Khuene, and Davis Love play in the next women's major. That's right. Let them bomb the living **** out of an LPGA major course setup and see how the ladies like a truly open tournament.

The forward thinkers at the R & A have decided that if you're good enough to qualify you're good enough to play. That's the way it should be at the highest level. I would be concerned if the R & A changed the qualifying structure to include winners of women's events or top ranked women players.
The LPGA knows that allowing men to play in their tournaments would destroy women's golf............that's why LPGA rules prohibit men from playing in their tournaments.

If the PGA made a rule prohibiting women from playing in the events it's sexist. By making a rule prohibiting the men from the playing, they're admitting they're weaker than the PGA Tour, and at the same time want everything to be equal. The typical double standard. They want the same jobs but still want us to pay for dinner and hold the door.

Is this simply what you believe ? or
Is it what you think others would claim if it were to happen ?
What do you base this on ?
Has anyone suggested that such a move by the PGA would be sexist or is this just some "straw man" theory you've come up with to justify the rest of your post ?

I would love it if the PGA would make a rule prohibiting women from playing. And yes it's what I think others would claim were it to happen. That is just my opinion based on what I've observed in my short 20 years on this planet. No stats or evidence to back it up. Just one man's opinion. And I'd bet the rest of my golfing career that I'm not the only one who thinks so. As for the rest of my post, it was more in good fun than meant to be a serious dissertation on the state of the women's rights movement. Next time you post, try to make sure your wife isn't reading what you're writing so we can hear your real opinion on the matter. J/K
