I think it's great. You can't get in on a "sponsor's exemption" in a Major (well, a PGA Tour Major anyway and yes, I know there are special exemptions but those are never given out to boost the gate or TV exposure ). Playing your way in is fair to everyone.
The only question I have is do women play from the tips or the red tees? Were do LPGA members play from for that matter? Let's be honest, Wie and Sorenstam can probably out drive a lot of PGA members.
Of all the majors, and the way they are each set up, which one do you think a women has the best chance at making the cut?
I love flushing League out of the brush.
I don't hide anywhere dante My views are always out there for everyone to see.
Maybe we should be asking which Major a woman has the best chance of qualifying for before we ask this question, but I'll bite......
The British Open, by far. :nodsmiley Provided that they play in benign conditions a straight hitter can get a lot of distance on the baked fairways and the greens are always slower than most PGA Tour stops. Making the cut in any of the other Majors is a pipe dream for any female playing today.
Somebody has to remind all the "women can compete with the men on the PGA Tour" dreamers that there is such a thing as reality!
BTW......We could use a little "firing up" around here lately! :nodsmiley
I'm either about to jump up and shout A-M-E-N, or wait for the choir to start...I do have to agree with you league, if the women are going to have any shot at a Major, it'd be the Open Championship...But, I still don't see it happening...
Are the women's majors now going to accept men to play in them? Why do women have to be permitted to play? Honestly, that is why there are seperate tours. Personanlly, I don't have a problem with the decision but why is it really being done? What is the real motivation? $$$?
Since you have to QUALIFY, I think it is a moot point. The Majors are for the BEST PLAYERS IN THE WORLD, PERIOD. If a woman, senior, man, kid, etc goes through the qualifying and makes it in, that person should be allowed to play. I will reiterate one FACT though...THERE IS NO MAN'S TOUR. There is no M in PGA TOUR which is why they do not have a sex requirement in their by-laws...it is purely supposed to be the pinnacle of professional golf competition. The only reason it is an issue is because of Wie getting publicity exemptions into PGA/Canadian/Nationwide TOUR events without having accomplished anything yet. I would argue that by being the #1 Female in the world, Annika DID qualify for her sponsor exemption and Whaley did qualify as well even if it was on a technicality (which has now been eliminated).
While I agree that women who qualify should be able to play in a Major I doubt if one will ever qualify. I think that was proven by Annika at a Colonial.....a very short course by the PGA standards. However if one ever did her best chance would be at the British.
