Apparently, Jack wasn't joking with his goodbye at Augusta....he now says that his playing career will be over after this year's Open Championship. He'll still play some Skins Games and the like, but nothing else. Should be an emotional week at St. Andrews.
I think it'll be his last major, but still not convinced it will be his last tournament. In 2000, it was supposed to be Jack's last British, and he came back. Wouldn't surprise me if he still plays the Memorial once in a while. I think he may be done with the Senior Tour. Nevertheless, I'm going to miss the Bear.
Jack has always said he would never be a ceremonial golfer and it looks like he's staying true to his word. For those of us that saw him play, he's already missed. He's still the greatest golfer of all time, and will remain so until (and if) someone passes his PGA victory and Major Championship victory career totals.

I whole-heartedly agree, league. Jack Nicklaus has always been that "good thing" I never wanted to come to an end.

Guess we'll just have to wait a few years until Michelle Wie
joins the pga tour hehe...... j/k
I've never seen Jack play.... like when he was younger..because I'm not a o.g.
I'll mainly remember him because my putter is named after him.

You don't need to be an OG to see the brilliance of Jack's career. I didn't play or even follow golf until 1988 and Jack's best days were behind him by then. Since then however, I've read everything I could get my hands on about the history of the game, and watching the Golf Channel and the broadcasts of old tournaments and shows like The Big Three has been a very enlightening experience. Regardless of what the majority of your generation think.....Tiger Woods did not invent golf.
Contrary to what you may think......I hope Wie does develop the talent to earn a PGA Tour card. I just don't believe she will.
I can still remember when a young Nicklaus was referred to derisively as "Fat Jack," mostly by those of us who resented his displacement of Arnold Palmer as the best golfer on Tour and those of us who found his personality less engaging than that of the Latrobe Lasher.
Once he found his stride, he amazed us all with his accomplishments on the course and with his growth as a human being and representative of the game. This giant of golf provided the measure of greatness to which Tiger Woods and all young golfers of this generation aspire. Jack's legacy of greatness stands as a tribute to his physical talent and incredible desire.
While paying these well-deserved tributes to this icon of the game, we should probably also recognize that Nicklaus's "deliberate" approach to playing a shot did more to slow down the pace of play than anything else in the history of golf. Had he been less successful and therefore less visible, his "deliberateness" would have had no more effect than that of other slow players before him, but his success bred imitation and tolerance of a much slower pace--both on the pro tour and at public and private courses everywhere.
I have already stated in an earlier thread that Jack was/is my favorite golfer of all time. Does anyone disagree that if you had to make ONE shot or sink One putt, wouldn't Jack be the guy you would go to? His powers of concentration were unbelievable!
i personally don't care. jack has always rubbed me the wrong way. maybe its his mickey mouse voice or the countless stories i've heard of his two-faced demeanor on and off the course.

Jack's always had a bit of a prickly personality. I've always thought that he said what he was thinking regardless of what anyone thought of it, but I've never heard him considered two-faced.

two-faced might be a bit harsh.
maybe "enigmatic" is a better word.
lik ei said...legend and the greatest of all time but i'm just not a fan.

great golfer but good riddance.
When you're the best at your profession it seems like everyone wants to take their shots at you. Tiger and VJ are certainly modern day examples of this. Jack was head and shoulders above the players of his day and many people(and players) resented him for that. Obviously that still holds true today.

i'm only 28 years old. jack was not the dominant golfer during my lifetime. it has nothing to do w/ him being the best ever. it has to do w/ what i see and hear in interviews.
One to be missed. It has been some time since Jack has been competitive. How appropriate for his swan song to be at St. Andrews where he won two of his three Open Championships.
