The only area that Jack is still surpassing Tiger is a greater rate of top 3s in majors.
Well that and tour wins, and Major wins... too many IFs to be having this discussion now, it's too early in Tigers career and Jack was so good for such a long time. A few years of dominance does not make a player the best ever.

Win, that's all just win a lot more... or rather continue winning as he has for a another 10 years or so.
My favorite golfer ever is Arnold Palmer...with Payne Stewart a close second.
I agree. He needs to keep winning. As far as saying he's #3, I don't know about that. I think the top few (Hogan, Nelson, Jack, Tiger, Bobby Jones, et. al.) are pretty much a #1a group.
The things that get me about Tiger, though, is the attitude on the course when things aren't going his way (which has been brought up ad nauseum here, though I did love the reference to Stevie as his "thug" the other day! ), the way he's been almost overly selective of his events in recent years (although to his defense, that seems to be a trend with a number of top level members of the tour -- but not Vijay!), and again the media. While I realize what the ESPN and Golf Channel hacks say is out of his control, being force fed "Tiger is the greatest ever" night in and night out especially early in his career has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. This kid was christened as the Chosen One before he ever turned pro, and in my mind set the bar for "greatest ever" that much higher.
Hogan. The wee ice mon was so far ahead of his time. If he was playing (in his prime) today, he would be (metaphorically) killing the rest of the field.
I agree. Hogan probably tops my list. The whole come back from the car wreck was pretty amazing.
I like Chris Dimarco, Phil Mickelson, Sergio, and who can't like Freddy Couples? At the 99 Open, I gained a lot of respect for Bob Tway. He took the time to stop and give a ball to my nephew, then took time to sign it. Can't help but root for Daly through all of his troubles.
I'm a big fan of Troy Matteson, on the Nationwide Tour at the moment but soon to get promoted as he is leading the money list. His family goes to my church.
On the big tour, I'm a fan of Goosen, but I'm not sure why. I jsut like the quiet gentlemanly manner he has and performs at such a high level.
Tiger can never be the #1 golfer ever, for the simple fact of the way he used to handle mishaps.
If you noticed Jack play, whenever he made a poor shot, if you looked carefully, you may see him utter a swear word under his breath. Although Tiger hasn't (yet) gone the way of Pat Perez, what with kicking his 3 wood into the ocean after a bad shot at pebble a few years ago, or Tommy Bolt, turning a club into a javelin and throwing it at the spectators, he still has had many visible tantrums on course over the years. Lately he may have been toning it back, but Tiger just doesn't have enough class to be #1.

nice... so true... as posted earlier, Hogan and Nelson. From the Modern Era, I'd have to say good ole' Freddy Couples. Boom Boom has been having back problems lately, but he still can pull off the wins. I'd like to see him win a major this year. He's my sentimental pick for the British (is he playing in it?? I thought he was).
Hogan and Jones are in a dead heat at the top of my list. Say whatever u want about "the competition not being as tough then", but you also have to take into account the equipment, and the course setup which was vastly inferior. Hogan (like snead) could drive 300 yards on command in the 40's and 50's!!! With those sticks!!! That's gotta be a good 350-380 with today's equiptment. Plus he hit most fairways and most greens in regulation. It is said (in the book Bogey Man), that hogan once won a 4 round PGA tournament without hitting a single ball in the rough!!! Not much needs to be said about the owner of the impregnable quadrilateral. He didn't have the machine like swing of Hogan, but his recovery was as good as anyone's and he found a way to win. The only one to ever crack the hull of the impenetrable grand slam and an amateur at that. Also, after 1925, he only played a few tournaments a year (pretty much just the majors), and says in down the fairway that he rarely picked up a club in the off season. The only four tourneys he played in 1930 were the US amateur, US Open, British Amateur, and British Open which he won all of. His record may be the most elusive in all of sports, with only tiger and jack ever coming close.
In today's game of golf, i would have to say Jim Furyk is my favorite. We followed hiim at the 04 buick open and he is just such a down to earth guy, with ball striking that will bring tears to your eyes. He only missed one green in the first 15 holes, and came back on the next with a bird. All i can say is with the Open setups getting tighter and the rough getting longer, he will be someone to watch out for in the coming years. When he feels %100 with that wrist again(evidence of this starting to happen at the wachovia this year), look out Big Four.
