So it won't happen this week...

A new-look TPC at Southwind awaits the field this week. David Toms is the two-time defending champ, fresh off a third-place finish at The Colonial. I bet he does well.

The field has some interesting names. I'm hoping Tom Lehman can recapture the form he showed late last year and early this.

If I were a touring pro I might not be able to resist playing in this event, due to the fact that the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the sole charity. What a wonderful cause.

Off-topic, but did you make it to Memphis in May? I used to go to it ever year...

Bama, I played the Sunset Symphony concert for 8 years and paid dues down on Beale and at Musicfest. I don't set foot near downtown unless there's a check involved.

I went to the tourney yesterday and followed a few groups for a couple of holes each.

My first thought is that the course is tougher since the redesign. The greens are a little more grainy. They were giving Brad Faxon fits (he was pretty vocal about them). The first group I picked up was Faxon, Perry, and Huston. I've been pretty effusive with my praise for Kenny, and he showed that he was a true sportsman. He dunked his second on the short par 5 and laughed about it, got U&D for par and went on to make a bird the next hole. I also followed the group with Wittenberg and O'Hair. Let me tell you, Sean O'Hair has the potential to be a World Top 10 player. Man, he has so much game it's silly. Casey showed that he at least deserved his invite, but not much more. I saw a lot of other players like Choi, Daly, Azinger, Love III, Funk, etc., but really wanted to follow Kip Henley. I picked him up on his 4th and stayed with him for 9 or 10 holes. I had a Member badge on, so his wife and former caddie both introduced themselves to me after a couple of holes. His whole family is "good people." Kip's a blast to watch and listen to on the course. He may be able to pound the ball, but his narrow move at the ball gets him into trouble with his short irons, and his putting was not very confident at all (yikes.... what a bad sentence). I saw him flip-flop with putting grips and strokes the entire time I was with him. I think he is a fine player, but really needs some work before heading to the big show.

I'll be sitting behind 18green on Sunday afternoon. Watch for me. I'm handsome.

Nice to see Sean O'Hair rebound with a 66 to make the cut. He's the real deal.

I love the way this course has been set up this week. Firm and fast. Really demands a lot more attention from the players.

I am also impressed with the two par 3's on the back nine. Much different from each other, but both very interesting, more especially with the course set up. The 14th, in my opinion, is a very solid par three.

Justin Leonard looks to be in complete control. Not one mistake in round three. Totally locked in.

When I see a guy like Justin play so well...like he used to so consistently...I wonder what other things, going on in his life, might be contributing to his inconsistent (of late) play. I think the TV networks could do just a bit better in keeping fans up-to-date on the state of these players' games. A bit more investigative reporting, if you would.

Congrats to Justin on his 10th career PGA TOUR victory. This is only his second multi-victory season.

When this year started I was hoping for better campaigns from a few Americans who have been quiet of late; Justin, David Toms, Charles Howell and Chad Campbell. Howell and Campbell started well but have fallen off.

It was also nice to see Toms, Funk and DL3 finish strong. Davis apparently will play in each of the next three events on TOUR. He has actually been steady, if unspectacular, this year, what with his now five top-ten finishes.

The excitement in the air by the 18th green ( I was sitting on the bank of the lake 30 feet from the pin ) was almost intoxicating. We could see the TV screen and the scoreboard both from our vantage point, so we knew that Leonard was struggling. We heard the crowd at 17 go nuts when Toms made his bird there. If you don't know this by now, we love David Toms here in Memphis... Watching Toms putt for birdie, we had a feeling that we might be witnessing a significant moment in golf history. When Leonard blocked his tee shot on 18, we had the same feeling. Ditto when he missed the green and when he almost left his pitch in the bunker. Many thanks to both of those guys for giving us a lot more action than we had bargained for.
