*Official* GR U.S. Open Pick 'Em Leaderboard & Discussion
Special thanks to JungleJ for creating the scoring spreadsheet for this Pick 'Em. I've been tinkering around with it and it will certainly make my job easier. Thank you!
This year's field comprises of 65 players which is what the Masters Pick 'Em field was.
Congratulations to jcgolfpro, winner of the Golf Rewind U.S. Open Pick 'Em game! Also, it was a great run for sbrentt, our defending U.S. Open Pick 'Em champion. Hope you all had a great time!
The only drawback I see to this contest is that it has nothing to do with who actually wins the US Open. You win by picking the low rounds of the day and that means you can pick right all 4 days and still not pick the actual winner.
For example: Players A, B, C, and D all shoot one great round but don't play well enough the other 3 rounds to win any points. Player E plays consistently (but never has a low enough round to gain points) and wins the US Open. Anyone who chose Player E correctly chose the winner but they wouldn't be a factor in this game.
Is there some way to award points for picking the best order of finish?

I suppose what you propose is a theoretical possibility... however Player E will almost by definition have to pick up some solid points.
I think it could be possible to add some points for leaderboard position, but the beauty of this game as it stands is that everyone is interested in every round (unless a lot of your picks miss the cut). Otherwise it only really gets interesting on Sunday.
On the Yahoo system, on how this is loosely based, if one of your golfers wins you receive additional bonus points. Maybe in the future we could have another section where you could pick the overall winner for some bonus points. We don't want to make it too hard on Vic to run this............wait a minute, he lives in Hawaii, what else does he have to do
I went over the past results for the Masters and looked at taylormade19's picks and he actually had both Tiger Woods and Chris DiMarco in his picks. For those with a short memory, Tiger beat DiMarco in a playoff. He also had both Mike Weir and Vijay Singh who both finished T5. K.J. Choi finished T33, Fred Couples finished T39, Stephen Ames finished T45 and Jay Haas finished 48th.
For the PGA Championship Pick 'Em, I was kind of interested in how top point earners correlated with the leaderboard. Here's how it turned out.
1. Vijay Singh (50 points)
T2. Chris DiMarco (50 points)
T2. Justin Leonard (no points. wasn't picked)
T4. Ernie Els (48 points)
T4. Chris Riley (48 points)
T6. K.J. Choi (46 points)
T6. Paul McGinley (no points. wasn't picked)
T6. Phil Mickelson (44 points)
The top point earners correlate pretty closely to the leaderboard. I won that contest and of those 8 players, I happened to pick Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson, Chris DiMarco and K.J. Choi. I didn't pick Vijay (outside of my tiebreaker) but I did pick 4 of the top 8 golfers.
It's true someone could win without picking the winner (since I've already proved it). The winner might not even be in the original list of 40 players but I don't think it's possible to win this contest without picking players who more or less finish at or near the top of the leaderboard.
I could add bonus points for picking the winner of the tournament. It came across my mind before but I decided against it because I figured a player who shoots the low score of the tournament doesn't then get 5 strokes knocked off of his score. I guess it's what all of you feel the most emphasis should be placed on. Picking the winner or picking the best overall field.
I like the way it is. It keeps it interesting from day to day following the ups & downs of all ones players. There will probably be at least a dozen people with the winner, though I suppose it wouldn't hurt to work it in there somehow.
