I don't know why, but I just had a feeling that Phil was going to struggle. Thats why I didn't pick him. I picked Toms and he is at -1 through 12 today.
Phil hasn't been playing the best of golf coming in. Since the Masters, he really hasn't contended in a tournament. His putter's been shaky the last month. Yesterday, he made a lot of 4 and 5-footers, but today he didn't. He's just not hitting it as solid or putting it as solid as he does when he's on his game.

Get Well soon Phil!
Toms had a road wreck, but he'll be ok. He's always a great pick.
Certainly is a shame that Phil had such a bad day today, as I figured he was in for a nice championship. But with the leaders coming back, he's not totally out of it...although I think it'll take two very very good rounds to do it (maybe 67-68 to have a chance).
Phil's already lost two strokes today thru 4 holes. And the first 4 holes are the easier ones on the course. He +8 right now and it looks all but over for Phil.

No doubt he's trying to be aggressive and make birdies to get back into it but as even he mentioned yesterday, it's just no something you can do at a US Open. Possibly at 3 and 4 one can push the issue a little and be aggressive, but after that, even par the rest of the way takes some super play.
It doesn't help matters that he TRIPLE BOGEYED the par-5 4th hole. That's the EASIEST on the golf course, and he completely messed it up. Hit the tee shot OB, then must have hit his 3rd shot OB as well, because NBC showed him hitting his 5th shot from the rough. He tried to wack his 5th with some kind of wood out of the rough, and of course that didn't work too well and only went about 10 yards. Other than that one hole, he's playing alright today. He's made several long par putts, which is good compared to yesterday's round. However, he's definitely out of it now, unless he goes out tomorrow and pulls a Johnny Miller while hoping that the leaders struggle today and tomorrow.

I didn't see this but Phil couldn't have hit his third shot OB if you saw him hit his fifth shot from the rough. Two OB shots from the tee means his fifth shot would have had to be from the tee also.

Yeah, I guess that's true. He must have had a tough time with his fourth shot (probably in thick rough) and only advanced it a few yards, just like with his fifth shot which was shown. Either way, tough hole for Mick, and other than that he played a solid round of golf.
