Is the media giving Goosen some extra motivation?

Not that he's already motivated. But I listened to Goosen's interview on Tuesday, and it just seemed like he was a little ticked by the media for the lack of respect. Frankly, I can't blame the guy. He's the defending champ and everyone's talking about the other 4 guys ahead of him in the world and he doesn't get a lot of pub from the newspaper writers. Players and golf analysts give him his due, but most writers don't. According to Andy North, after the interviews with Woods and Mickelson, many reporters left when Goosen came up to the podium. And yesterday, Goosen probably out of spite, declined to do post-round interviews with reporters. Don't know if I heard an interview from him today, either. There was a quote from Goosen after his press conf. Tuesday where he said he is probably going to have to win another one to get some recognition.

every time i hear someone talk about the big 4 they always mention goosen too. they always say something like he doesnt get any respect. But they always say goosen should be in there. just say the big 5 so we dont have to hear how goosen should be lumped with the other guys he already is . we have to hear a speach about it every time they a mentioned the other 4 its so stupid

Like I said, a lot give him the respect he deserves. But it's mostly the golf analysts and the players. The newsaper media has actually been quite rude to him. As soon as he stepped to the podium, Andy North said the place emptied out for the defending champ. I've read one article in the Florida Sun Sentinel that called Goosen "overrated." And many focus on the other four. Players and analysts give the guy his due, I won't argue that, but I do think the print media, like Andy North said, has lit a fire under Goosen and he wants to stick it to them badly this weekend.

You know, there may be something to your claims...

Just kidding...I'm sure the reason they have Gore's picture posted is because he shot the best score in round 2 of the leaders...I just found it kinda odd that neither Browne (first round leader) nor Goosen (defending champ) had their mug up there...and also that they have Gore listed behind the other two...

Goosen doesn't have enough "flare" for the media. He just goes about his business- steady, calm, and methodic. No temper-tantrums, doesn't have a pity party, doesn't go into such a state of agony everytime the ball doesn't drop in the cup, doesn't show much emotion if the ball is not dead at the stick.

Personally, I'd rather have my son emulate R.Goosen's character on the golf course rather than some of the other's.

Go Retief and put another Open trophy on the mantle.

Exactly stag, Goosen is one of the finest players in the game. And as a bonus he is one of the gentleman as well. Its not often you hear him have a whinge about something.
I've got $20 on him to win at the TAB and he's paying something ridiculous like $11.50. This course just plays into his hand, I'm having trouble understanding why the media doesn't give him the credit he deserves. I mean he's won 2 US Opens. Thats 1 more major than Phil has but yet you hear 4X as much about him than you do about Goosen.

I just love it. Retief is forcing the media to give him his due, simply by his quality of play, but today, Jason will get the majority of attention which falls right into Retief's hands.

The media are once again showing, what all good golfers around the world know too well, that the people in it actually know very little about golf.
They open their large mouths and let their even bigger stomachs belch out a load of nonsense and in the case of Goosen, if he does go on and wins it, then I,d love him to go out and do what Faldo did with his victory speech after winning the British Open,( "I,d like to thank all the fans from the bottom of my heart and the Press/Media from the heart of my bottom"), of course Goosen won,t as he,s too much of a gentleman.

Well, if Goosen wins today, they better drop that stupid "Big Four" label. Either drop it all together, call it the Big Five, or if if you call it Big Four, make sure Goosen's one of the names in it. Three US Opens in five years is something only Ben Hogan has done since World War I. But first he has to seal the deal today.

They've been talking a lot about the "Big Five" this week...Goosen is pretty much included along with Tiger, Vijay, Ernie and Phil in most things I've seen lately.

The feeling I get is if Goosen is in contention in a tournament, they call it BIg Five. If he's not, it's Big Four. Overall, it's a Big Joke to not include him with the other top notch golfers. If anything, he should actually jump some of those other guys w/a win today. It would put him above Ernie and Phil, in my opinion. This would be his 23rd worldwide win, 16th this decade. He will most likely pass MIckelson in the world rankings and close in on Ernie Els. His resume is starting to look like that of a future Hall of Famer.
