With that said, if Tiger is trailing after the end of the third round the odds are against him. It is even more so if he isn't in the final group. I believe the 3rd round is very important for Tiger if he is to win this year's U.S. Open.

While it's true that he hasn't won coming from behind, it's also true that he's usually nowhere near the lead when he's not leading. He's basically an all-or-nothing player, where he either kicks everyone's butt for the week, or struggles with his game and finishes 20th or something. I think his goal is to finish at Even par, so he needs to shoot 1 under over the next 2 days. If he does that, he should have a good chance if the course gets tougher over the next two days.
