What an incredible final round! One of the most memorable Sundays in recent U.S. Open history.
To play the No. 2 course, set up as it was, in 71-69-71-69 is truly a fantastic accomplishment.
Remember back in 2000, when Campbell clawed his way to the 64th spot in the OWGR and earned the right to play Tiger in the first round of the Accenture Match Play Championship? Remember his "I want a piece of Tiger" line? And Tiger crushed him. Michael hadn't been quite the same player since.
What a rewarding victory for both Michael Campbell and New Zealand! And what a great charge by the legendary Tiger Woods. A fantastic U.S. Open, folks!
Yes, it was great to see him win, my wife asked me about him and wasn't knowledgeable of him and I told her that he has the talent and perhaps folks (myself included) would've thought he'd have won a major before this because he has a great game.
Nice to see him keep it going when the pressure could've folded him and most players.
Great for Michael and for New Zealand. I'm sure he'll be a hero back home and he seems like such a nice young man. He was even a good influence on Steve Williams, who actually talked to reporters after the round in his excitement for Campbell.
Great golf course, great setup (in Tom Meeks' final Open, he sure got this one right ), great event....of course I was rooting for Tiger but he was just outplayed by a gutty competitor this week. Michael Campbell is a talented guy and it's nice to see him break through. I hope all of New Zealand can celebrate this accomplishment, as a country with such enthusiasm for the game deserves to have its champion.
Yet another classic event on a classic course....as droogy said in another thread, and I'll take it further...Pinehurst #2 is the finest championship course not just in America, but anywhere in the world. No tricking up, no praying for the wind to blow, no taking the course to the edge of its life (literally) to prevent guys from tearing it up...Ross' design will stand the test of time and any equipment advances they might throw at it in the future.
Tiger had his chances but he sure looked human on some of his putts coming down the home stretch.
True, but Campbell on the other hand was rock solid down the stretch on all the putts that mattered...almost Goosen-like. It'll be interesting to see if this win spurs Michael on to a big career on the PGA Tour, or is he's kinda satisfied with just this one. At 36, he's got a few years of his prime left, and with that kind of grit and determination, he should contend in a few more majors before his time on Tour draws to a close I reckon. :nodsmiley
All Hail King Cambo[color=Navy]
The man just about a national hero here at the moment. It's great to see back in winners circle and just awesome for it be in a major.
The only bad part was that I have'nt seen any of it yet, I had to work andf have seen nothing!!!
It was exciting to see Michael Campbell win! Everyone has their favorite golfers that they would like to see win. When it became apparent that my favorites were not going to make it, I especially rooted for Campbell. I'm a softy for an underdog. I knew that girlgolfa and kiwidave were going to be thrilled, and their country was well represented! I'd like to see some links to your local papers and read New Zealanders reactions.
Hey girgolfa - since you're in NZ, can you post any links to New Zealand-based articles, pictures, or any other newspaper or magazine websites with stories of the win??
Did not tune in until the middle of the back nine and when I saw the leaderboard...oh boy. Goosen and Gore choked but to see Michael Campbell at the top was a sight. I am glad he won and hope the can carry this into St. Andrews.
