A bogey on 13 dropped him back to -6. He did what he needed to do on the scoring stretch of the course, now he just needs to hold it together in the closing holes.
Woods with another bogey at 16. He also had a 25 footer for birdie at the 14th? What was up with that? TNT, of course, spent the first 15 mins not really showing any golf coverage so we don't have any clue how he managed to mess up a par 5 that he can hit in two easily. And, at 15 he missed a 6 footer for birdie...kinda doing what he's been doing the last year or so --- getting off to a great start and then struggling to keep his momentum going.
I think Vijay will shoot better than Tiger today. The 17th is an example of the difference between the two. Tiger lays up with an iron when it's downwind and he could fly the narrow part of the fairway with his driver. Vijay won't even hesitate to pull the driver on pretty much every hole (including 16 where Tiger laid up with an iron and had 210 yards back into the wind which led to a bogey). Yes, Vijay's putter is always a question mark, but if he plays aggressiveley he will shoot around 7 or 8 under I think.
Birdie at 18 for Tiger to finish the first round at 6 under. Wow, what could have been today. Let's just say "if" he had done this:
*not bogeyed 13 and 16 by laying back too far with irons
*not wasted the par 5 14th which he can reach easily in two
*not missed a 6 footer for birdie on the 15th after a nice approach shot
That's looking at 10 under on his round. Methinks the Tiger from 2000 would have shot that today with the way he hit the ball. Mealsothinks that Vijay Singh won't be so conservative on certain holes and will shoot 7 or 8 under today.
I think the players this morning had a bit of an advantage, and will have so tomorrow where there's forecasted to be no wind at all. But wind seems to be blowing a bit harder this afternoon.
