Fair play to Jack ...I think he deserves his parade. If it wasn`t for the likes of him and more so, A.Palmer the Open Championship may have slid off the map many years ago.
I`d also like to give Brad Faxon a big thumbs up for playing so well after having to qualify for the Open ...I think some of the current young guns wouldn`t be prepared to invest the time money and effort thesedays...shame
If Jacks putter was working, he would be under par now.
TyeDye, I completely agree! Jack has been complaining that he's not playing competitive golf, but in my opinion he's still VERY competitive but it seems like his putter has not cooperated with him. It's almost like Vijay --- plays pretty good all the time, but can't make the putts, except of course Jack is at a slightly lower level than Vijay b/c of the distance factor. I really do believe that if Jack had made some of the many missed putts over the last two days, he'd be 2 or 3 under par right now, maybe even better.
Perhaps the term "golf enthusiast" should not be available to jtdiver.
Nicklaus is golf ... despite the modern generation. No-one has been more modest in victory, more gracious in defeat and had a better appreciation for the game than Nicklaus and for those of us who were lucky enough to see him play when he was the greatest will always be very grateful.
Go well Jack
Couldn't agree more.
Jtdiver you certainly are entitled to your opinion, but don't worry... this will be his last fairwell.
Jack's explanation of why he came back to St. Andrews for "another" farewell appearance is certainly honorable. The R & A moved up the Old Course in the Open rotation for the sole purpose of having Jack play at St Andrews for the last time in Open competition. Was Jack supposed to turn down the honor? Those that either don't know, or don't care, about the history of the game and what this man has done for golf may beef about it, but those of us that appreciate golf history and golf's living legends enjoyed every second of it.
I'm sorry if watching golf history unfold live interrupted your viewing of a few meaningless shots by players that owe everything they have to Jack and the very few like him.
I found tears welling up in my eyes as I watched the footage of Jack stopping on the bridge, waving to his fans...and later when he hugged his former nemesis and true friend, Tom Watson...
I truly hope we haven't seen the last of Jack. He just hasn't been the same golfer due to age and the hip replacement. Maybe they can get him to play the occasional Skins Game.
65 years old and he shoots an even par round on that course. Unbelievable. Think about how many of the best players in the world he played better than. I think that's even more phenomenal than Michelle Wie's performance as a 15-year-old. Nicklaus can't bomb it out there with the young guns but he still put up that kind of round.
Smart move by the R&A (how often do you read that) to move the 2005 event to StAndrews. They are making this the last year Jack can play cos of the 65 rule so they changed the rota to make sure it was at St Andrews.
After Jack dwelt on the bridge on 18 , an official walked up beside him to the 18th green. Did he tell Jack that they were now on the clock?

Quite...
Even though as a competitive player he may have long gone off the boil, he still showed us that a 65 year old, who is not exactly in the best of health can still play St Andrews far better than many Scratch golfers & club hackers.
Heck.. He didn't miss out on the cut by much & showed us some hints that the old magic is still there.
It would be great to see him in the Seniors Tour, though I doubt, by the way he talked on the interview after on the BBC, whether he was even prepared to consider even that.
I personally think he would be a great choice for a commentator, who could be an American answer to the BBC's Peter Alliss.
Go Jack...
You're the dude, even for many Brits. Enjoy your retirement, you deserved the rapturous applause & even more, that many of us were not there to be able to show how much you were appreciated.
I think It was a great way to bow out & a great final putt, a birdie on the 18th :)
I know he did a lot of good for the game but IMO he's had too many farewells and I for one am tired of Jack this, Jack that.... blah blah. I mean he hasn't even finished in the Top 10 in the British for 25 years. Give it a rest. Here's to hoping he shoots 80 today so we don't have to endure this over the weekend and he never comes back for good. Let's not feed his ego anymore than it already is.
I was quite taken aback when I read this post. Everyone is obviously entitled to their opinion. Others here have stated very well the reasons Jack deserved the attention he received this year. I don't know of another sport, other than golf, that allows us the privilege of watching our favorites play for over 40 years.
I watched a retrospective of Jack's career during the Masters this year. He said that when it came down to the wire, he never wished for another golfer to play poorly or miss a shot so that he would win a tournament. That shows what a gentleman he has always been about the sport he has contributed so much to.

No respect to jack, Im sorry but you are totally wrong and its time to give ur head a shake,
without jack the game wouldnt be where it is today, maybe if you did as much as jack id have respect for you, but you have none of my respect, because you can even pay ownage to greatness in the game of golf
I posted "Go Jack" threads at a couple of golf sites. I was really hoping he would make the cut. He birdied 18 to shoot an even 72 in round two. I think he missed the cut by only two strokes.

I have to agree that was one of the truly magical moments in sports where the moment transcended the game and spoke to the heart.
