Does Phil have the game to run away with it?
I know it is early and the scores are close but do you think he has the type of game to runaway from a pack and make it tough to catch him?
I don't want to see him do it. I want to see a duel this weekend. Frankly, I'm shocked b/c I was willing to take Ben Curtis this week before Phil. The way he was putting last week, his driver's been sketchy, his game's been off. But somehow it's come together these last 2 days, so who knows. Got same great golfers there behind him (Vijay & Retief) that have the game to catch him.
Sure he has the game to do it, but a lot will depend on who's chasing him. I don't see DL3 hanging in there all weekend. If Retief & VJ were to fall off the pace a bit it could happen. I wouldn't bet on it though.

He's a streak player and when he gets on a roll and can rip off four, five or six birdies in a row. He definitely has the ability to do it, which is why he's faced some criticism for not doing better in majors.
4 up now on DLIII, hoping against hope that lefty fizzles out and someone else takes it. I don't want to see him jumping around on the 72nd green again, especially with his new added girth.
He definitely has the game to run from the pack, but like the one poster said I think he looks in the mirror to see who's on the bumper...who it is may affect if he comes back to the field. Let's just hope his course management for the next couple of days is on top and that he doesn't try an miracle shots. Take your cake and eat it when you have to.

Talking of miracle shots ( not sure which hole ) but Phil played a fantastic shot over the trees and got amazing height, backspin and sidespin on the ball, I thought he was "dead" where he was.
I have not seen a shot as good or brave since Seve was in his prime and yes! Phil does have the game to dominate.

He's got a 4 stroke lead with 36 holes to play. He's in essence taken control of the tournament and it's his to lose. Somebody is really going to have to get hot to catch him or he's got to collapse in rounds 3 and 4. It's going to interesting to see if he's got "the stones" to close the deal.
Having a big lead after two rounds and then running away with it is probably harder than having a one shot lead.....guys who try to keep playing agressive usually get burned, and guys who try to play safe end up playing too conservatively and get passed up by others who get on a roll. While Phil has the ability to keep it going, you'd think at some time the 35 footers will stop rolling in and whether he gets too agressive or too passive, he'll come back a little. I think Phil will still lead going into the final round of the PGA, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him shoot an over par round tomorrow.

Maybe you didn't see Tiger's 3-iron out of a bunker at the 2002 PGA then? Or his 4-iron low hook from the TREES at the 2003 Buick Invitational that stopped like most people's 7 iron from the FAIRWAY? Those were the two most incredible shots I've seen lately, and if I remember correctly, Phil's shot on Thursday was from another fairway? It was a great shot for sure, but he had a perfect lie to get the spin on it that he did so the spin wasn't surprising at all --- getting as close as he did IS surprising b/c he was on another hole's fairway with his yardages messed up a little bit I'm sure.

I agree with that. It's tough to follow a great round with another one. I see something around 70-72 for Phil.
I remember watching the 1980 US Open evolve at Baltusrol. Nicklaus opened with 63, then followed with 71 and the announcers alluding then to this scenerio. I was only 15 then, but realized they were right.
It's just tough to do.

For Phil, it's all in the putting. He's gotten to 8-under almost purely on his putter. He's been making bombs the last 2 days. He hasn't hit many fairways, but his putter has been brilliant. It's all about whether he can keep it up. Frankly, I'm shocked b/c his putter has been awful the last few months and out of nowhere it shows up?? Retief was putting poorly going into the US Open and then got a couple hot days before it went sour again on Sunday. Hopefully the same doesn't happen to Phil. We'll see.
