Favorite major championship venues of the last 10-15 years??
Since I think most would agree that this year's major setups have generally been pretty good, I figured I'd start a thread asking which major venues you've most liked in recent times. Some are aesthetically pleasing, while some have historical links, and some are just a great blend of challenging and exciting golf holes. So which venues have you most liked in the last decade and a half of major golf?
For me, other than the standbys in Augusta, St. Andrews and Pebble Beach, my favorites have been Pinehurst for the '99 and '05 US Opens, Medinah for the '99 PGA, and Baltusrol for the '05 PGA. Pinehurst is just a classic course and while some may say the USGA put the pins a little close to ledges to make it somewhat unfair, the course still held its own twice to produce an exciting golf tournament. As for the other two, both held up pretty well as well and I enjoyed them aesthetically moreso than most others. I just enjoy the tree-lined layouts I guess. Honorable mentions to Bethpage for the '02 US Open and Muirfield for the '02 Open Championship.
Card, I agree with your picks for favorites and besides the classics, I loved Bethpage as a viewer. Would I be totally off-topic to tell you that I detested Shinnecock Hills? The place looked like ground under construction for a new mall - which would probably be a better use for that ugly property.

Off topic is fine.....we all tend to go OT a little once in a while, right? If I were picking least favorites, I'd have to say Shinnecock last year when it died on them (I didn't mind the look early in the week and in '95), Whistling Straits last year, and Valhalla in the PGAs of '96 and '00.....sure, it was exciting in '00, but the course was just too easy for a major.
Not including Augusta, for out and out beauty Medina for sure. My wife is not a real golf fan but when we went to Medina she was just in awe of the place.
I have to agree. I would love to build a cottage on the hill behind the second hole, overlooking the lake.!!!!!!
I love Augusta and the way they perfect everything, Location wise Turnberry is on a very nice piece of coastline and for the course itself..... well that would be Carnoustie as it is still so raw and not overdeveloped.
In the U.S, I thought Bethpage (Black) looked magnificent and of course Pebble Beach and Pinehurst.
