Until he beats his wife, abuses his kids, spits on the outstretched hands of fans, scowls at the gallery, sends Bones to steal someone's camera, stops talking to the media, or complains about a fellow-competitor's footwear, I'll continue to wish Phil the best of luck.
Of course he's genuine. Have you ever seen him angry? When he birdies he looks like the cat that ate the canary. If you were closing in on forty million earnings you'd be happy also. See JCGOLFPRO post.
When the PGA was at Oakhill CC (Rochester, NY) Phil was playing the course prior to the event and had a 2 footer on 18 to own the course record. He picked up.
The grandson of the guy who had the record was blown away by the thoughtfullness.
I am sure many pros would do this but Phil is the only player I have first hand knowledge of doing it.
I like him because he seems like he is easy going and would be fun to play with, I am sure he can bust chops with the best of them.
The only people who criticize and are suspicious of Phil are the jealous, petty, small-minded losers who wish they had as much going for them as Phil does.
In today's world of contract squabbles, hold-outs, scandals and trash-talking prima donnas, Phil tries very hard to present a decent, wholesome image. And he gets criticized for it. Amazing.

Well put droogy33! Phil has shown no traits or behavior (on or off the course) that would lead anyone to think he's anything other than a good family man and a professional golfer, in every sense of the word.......so let's try to make up stuff by speculating on something none of us have any first hand knowledge of.
it's either he's a saint or doing a very good job acting cuz i don't know anyone who can hold a smile for that long and playing a game as frustrating as golf can be at times
The media is trying to spoon feed us a load of **** to get ratings, and unfortunately, people swallow it. There are just some things you can't fake, and I hate it now that we live in a world where such a genuinely nice guy gets a bad rap because the mud-slinging media needs controversy to boost ratings.
Perhaps the other pros don't like him BECAUSE of the way he is friendly with the fans. My personal opinion is that I would rather identify with a person that is friendly than one who just blows you off if you even look their way. The only nice thing I have seen Tiger do is sign his glove and give it to a kid he hit in the head with a drive.
I agree with that assessment. It seems that at some point that if Phil was faking it that it would eventually come out in some public manner. Kind of like Shooter McGavin in Happy Gilmore.

Or it could be that some "do" have personal experience, knowledge or are in other environments that do NOT get reported or stuffed down our face by the media.
I've learned from years around "the block" that there is always more than meets the eye.
a radio show reported once there was going to be an SI issue that had a big article on phil and reportedly was going to expose some infidelity on his part as well as a gambling addiction.
the article never came out so i assume those rumors were unfounded or the mickelson camp paid big bucks to keep it hush hush.

How did you hear of this? That's an incredibly unselfish move IMO!

I can't imagine Lefty foolin' around on his wife, I mean she's got to be the best-lookin' golf wife on tour, imo. Mere speculation on my part. But I do seem to recall Phil having gambling issues in the past, although I can't remember where I heard it and don't know if it's still an issue. I'll try to research that. I don't think, however, that either issue would necessarily bring his sincerity or authenticity into question.
Infidelity and/or gambling? What do either have to do with how he plays golf or interacts with fans and other players? I couldn't care less what he does in his PRIVATE life and I find it sad that there are so many that only want to dig up dirt on someone who has done nothing but good for his sport.
Those that are familiar with Sports Illustrated know that no amount of money would make a story of a superstar's supposed infidelity and gambling go away. The National Enquirer has probably copyrighted that story already?
