Phil's wife is gorgeous but let's face it so is every other athlete's wife and they cheat all the time. I'm a fan of Phil so I hope the rumors are false- part of Phil's appeal is his family man persona as well as being a great golfer.

Agreed. And I'll agree he's done "a lot" of good for his sport.

My neighbor used to play on the Tour and knows a few guys still, he told me the same thing, guys on Tour don't like Phil at all. The gambling rumors are all true also, he has a standing game every Monday for a $250,000 nassau with the rest of the pros.

He is pretty intense on the course but the easy-going, down-to-earth, philanthropic Phil is the real deal. He doesn't give money just to get in the press but only gives to what he cares about.

When you say "bones" are you refering to Phil? I've never heard him called that. How do you get to play that many rounds with him? Just know him personally?

Phil's penchant for gambling is well known. So what ? He's self-employed and it's his money. He has a number of friends on tour and the fans adore him. As others have said, he's either the best actor in the world or a heck of a nice guy... unattributed, sour-grapes comments of questionable origin notwithstanding.

That's true of top competitors in any sport - they're not well liked by the people they defeat.

Seems like I've heard that Arnie and Jack weren't that warm and friendly toward each other when they were going head to head in their primes.

As far as that SI article ...I remember the rumblings also. The infidelity issues sounded extremely far-fecthed. One of the examples was Phil walking in on Amy and Michael Jordan during the 1999 Ryder Cup.

Give me a break.

As far as the gambling story...their may be a little truth to that. I've heard since he picked the Ravens to win it, back in the preseason of the year they did win it...it intoxicated his passion in gambling and has since accumulated something like a 18 million dollar debt. (If true...his endoresment deal revenue would easliy take care of it.)

Again...pure speculation.

We all know he loves sports, especially the NFL, and likes to put down a little something something every now and then.....but who knows the extent.

And so what if he places down a wager. It's his money...it's not like he's betting on his own sport...ala Pete Rose.

I'm a Tiger fan in general, but also think the world of Phil and the class he exibits on the course. Is he a fake or phony...I dont know.

I think he holds Arnie in such reverence for his popular reputation with the galleries(ie autographs, eye contact, pleasant gestures in general)...that he may go a little overboard with it.

Then again...that's not a bad thing now...is it.

I've enjoyed this thread. No one could keep up an act like this for so long. I think Phil's the real deal. So the question should be, "Is Paris Hilton a phony?" Anyone played with her?

No one is the same person all the time but judging from what I've seen on TV and the personal encounter I had with Phil Bizarre brushes with fame or semi-fame my vote says his on screen demeanor is genuine. Granted, he may not treat other tour pros like he does his fans but I'm not about to hold that against him. How can you? The knock on Phil has always been that he's "too soft," and he doesn't have that "killer instinct." Well, maybe treating his fellow pros a bit more like competitors instead of friends is Phil's way of toughening up.

Phil's demeanor? I totally buy it. Yes, his wife is a lovely woman. His children, also, are beautiful. Seeing those kids run up to daddy, and the way he dotes on them does it for me. I love my daughter more than I've ever loved anything, and THAT I can identify with. Does that make me a good person? Maybe not, but it is what's made me a man.
Now if I could only break 80...

actually, phil was given a slap on the wrist a few years ago. It was one of the WGC tourneys where furyk was in a playoff with tiger. furyk chunked a bunker shot, and apparently mickelson made a quick (small) bet that furyk would hole the next one. he did of course....but i remember it being reported that it was a no no on phil's part even though he wasn't playing.

Phil sponsors a huge junior tourney here in San Diego and he remembers where he came from. He is a class guy.
