My take: he should have stayed out of respect....it was an arrogant move. If I remember correctly, one of the TNT cronies covering the event asked him at the end if he was going to stay and he replied: "Of course, there's free food!" Well, I guess his lady friend heard that and asked the "oh, you don't like my cooking" question.
If you're married, you can guess how that worked out for him...
Maybe Tiger needs to start endorsing Motel 6. I can imagine it now. Tiger hitting 6 iron and then saying "I'm Tiger Woods for Motel 6 and we'll leave the light on."
I've been more interested in the responses of some call in radio listeners.
They act like it's the end of the world. It's a golf tournament. GOLF. A sport.
There are a lot more important things to get "riled" up about.
One thing to have an opinion, but to try and criticize his character, or read into some deep meaning of it, c'mon....give me a break.
His life, his choice, (if it would've turned out bad for him, his lost) end of story...., right?
Are you guys sure he left? Th e announcers said his plane was on the runway fired up, but hasn't left yet.
Tiger admitted that he was at his home in Florida watching the Monday finish. Leaving early was his call and in this case it was a correct call. Every little thing Tiger does is scrutinized to the nth degree and this is no different. IMO this is really a non-story. Now if the number had dropped to -2 and Tiger was watching from his home.......... That would've been the biggest golf story since his Tiger Slam! :nodsmiley
Do you think the Tiger haters would've come out of the woodwork with that scenario?
What if someone other than Phil or Tiger had won? Would golf still need to be "saved?" Golf is in such shambles that without heroes like Phil to knock off the omnipotent one there would be no professional golf. The David and Goliath story is old news.
The PGA was entertaining, a good tournament to watch, and a fan favorite happened to win. Does anyone (other than the author) really believe that golf was going to live or die based on the outcome of this single tournament?
It doesn't take a genious to figure out that 4 or 5 other golfers would not completely fall apart on what was the BY FAR the easiest stretch of holes in order for him to make a playoff. Had it been just one person, maybe he would have stayed, but he knew that Phil, Elk, VJ, Thomas, Davis etc wouldn't all mess up all at the same time. And he was right.
And to reiterate what greenguy said, here's Tiger's quote on it....
"These are the best players in the world,'' Woods said. "Look at who's on that board -- it wasn't guys who have never been there before. If you have guys who had never been there before, then it might have been a different story, but each one of those guys had won major championships.''
I think it's a non-story myself.
Sure they all could've gagged...then again Duval might win the next 4 Majors.

I don't think the writer believes that golf was going to die, but he does make some good points that I agree with. Ultimately Tiger (or indeed anyone) winning everything in sight does not make for interesting golf seasons. Predictability makes things boring.
As for Tiger going home, well he made the right call, he showed real respect to the guys still out there. Padraig Harrington was quoted as saying that he might have stuck around (since he has no Majors) but understands why Tiger didn't.
From the article:
"No one's going to argue that Mickelson should be the world No. 1."
Uh, I am.
Tiger has won 2 majors this year, come in 2nd and 4th in the other two.
Tiger has finished in the Top 10 of most of the tournaments he has played this year and towards the end of last year as well.
Tiger's stats:
2nd in driving distance.
6th in GIR.
7th in Holes per Eagle.
1st in Birdie Average.
1st in Scoring Average.
2nd in All-Around Stats.
1st in Money Leaders.
1st in Par Breakers.
I think those stats are the stats of someone worthy to be No. 1 in the world.
Phil's stats:
35th in GIR.
135th in Holes per Eagle.
2nd in Birdie Average (not bad, except Tiger's #1)
3rd in Scoring Average (again, Tiger's #1)
10th in All-Around Ranking.
3rd in Money Leaders.
2nd in Par Breakers (behind Tiger)
So, the stats show, Phil's good, but Tiger's better. That's why Tiger's #1 and Phil's #3. So the author of that article is clearly out of it. And how did the PGA Championship 'save golf' anyway? I mean, it's Phil, winning a second major. Wow. If Tiger won, he'd be that much closer to breaking Jack's record, which in itself draws viewers and media attention. And golf is drawn even further into the spotlight.
