Two really bad tee shots end up kicking out of the trees and into the fairway. He nearly made birdie on the last one a couple of holes ago and I wouldn't be surprised if he made birdie on 16 now. You can't get much more lucky than those two shots. He'll be mad at the end of his round though. Thankful, but mad that he hit them that far off-line. So, he'll stay on the range for even longer than usual!
So his driver's at it again! How's he been putting?
Putting not so great, and the Greens in Regulation is not up to his usual standards either. But he's stiffed a lot of pins when he has hit the greens. The golf course just got a bit of revenge on Vijay at the 16th. It giveth and taketh away. Two bad tee shots kick out of the trees and into the fairway. Then he hits it in the water at the 16th. But, he gets lucky again! From the fringe, he's putting with the metal wood and makes the 30 footer for bogey. That could have been a disaster for him but he only drops one shot there.
Holy smokes....easily could've been a triple there!
No kidding, that thing was gonna go about 10-15 feet past easily. Very similar to Tiger's chip-in at the 7th on Sunday at Baltusrol. That one woulda gone 20 feet past and he woulda made a double bogey. But, luck happens sometimes.
Wow, Woods misses the fairway by a FOOT at the 14th and he can't even advance his ball to the green. Vijay misses a couple of fairways by 30 yards and has it bounce back to the fairway. Tiger has a 20 footer for par at 14 after pitching from 60 yards away. But wow, just goes to show that it's more penal to barely miss a fairway than it is to miss it way off-line. And that's how it is at US Opens too. You barely miss it and you're in 6 inches of rough. You miss 15+ yards off-line and you're usually in grass that has been trampled down by the galleries.
Vijay with a great recovery shot at the 18th. Tee shot went in the woods and didn't get spat back out this time. Pitched back to the fairway and then almost holed his wedge shot. Well done. Looks like he'll manage a good par to finish his round.

Maybe if a golfer hits it more than 5-10 yards off line, it ought to be out of bounds. That way they don't get more benefit being 15+ yards offline than only a yard offline.

See, that's the thing. Sometimes it's iffy. For instance, at a US Open you might hit it 15 yards off-line on one hole and be in some hay that is 3 foot tall where it truly is a penalty stroke. Or, as Vijay just did at the 18th, your ball might actually end up in trees where you have to lay up on a par 4, which makes it essentially a penalty stroke. But then, sometimes you'll see guys miss it really bad at a US Open and they'll end up with a perfect lie on trampled grass while their playing partner hits his tee shot a foot off the fairway in 6 inch rough. It just depends, but it does seem like quite often guys get away with bad tee shots vs. tee shots that really aren't that bad.
I think it'd be hilarious if they created OB only 10-15 yards off-line. Then Fred Funk would win every golf tournament and guys like Phil, John Daly, Tiger, and Vijay would all struggle to make the cut. LOL.
