First off, with a lot of members here in the Philly area...is anyone attending the US Amateur at Merion this week? If so, a report of the festivities would be cool, since there's been little TV coverage so far (none of which I've been able to catch ).
BTW, in regard to the USGA using this as a barometer of how Merion would hold up to today's bombers...the low round of the week in the strokeplay rounds at Merion was 69, 1 under. Philadephia CC was definitely the course for the guys to make hay on, with a couple 65s fired there.
Being a native Georgian and being from around Savannah, I was pleased to see Harmon finally close out that match and move on. He better show some flashes of greatness like he did in the Walker Cup if he expects to get any further..but I'll be rooting for him.
Steelerjoys, Harman is doing well winning this mornings match 6 & 5. Is he really only 16 and state junior and state champion, thats great. We had a young player in R.I. that won the state amatuer at 15 then had time to win a couple of state juniors afterwards. But by the time he was 20 he faded right out ala Ty Tryon.

Ty Tryon golf career is no way over. He's played some events on the Hooter's Tour. It remains to be seen if he was just a flash in the pan or if he has the goods to make it to the PGA Tour. It's way to early to bury the guy's career.

Tryon's career isn't over and it didn't sound like Bolt Fore was burying him just yet. However, Ty's current Hooter's Tour status is light years from his early "flash" on the PGA Tour and at this stage it's very questionable as to if he'll "pan" out. :nodsmiley
No Tryon's career isn't over yet but the fat lady is warming up. But this thread is about the phenom Brian Harman, he is doing himself proud at 16 years of age.

Actually, the thread is about the US Amateur being held this week...not that it matters I guess.
Right STL its about the U S Amatuer and Harman is 18 not 16 but he got beat anyway. Did anyone see the size of Van Der Walt? He's a giant.
Ce Me Golf read my post again and try to find where I said Tryon's career is over? All I said was he's FADED.
I only got to watch a few minutes of the event today...but boy that place looks baked out. Here I thought SW PA had gotten a little bit more precipitation than we had this year, but I guess not.
Too bad about Harman, I was pulling for him...he'll get a few more shots at this thing for sure, and I wouldn't bet against him winning one.
I didn't see Van der Walt, but isn't there a guy on the PGA or Nationwide Tour with that name? I wonder if they're any relation.
Yea..Harmon is 18 and just started at UGA. This year he was the State Am champ and he is a previous USGA Jr. Am winner. Funny story. The year he won the Jr.Am a few weeks before the tourney, he received a letter from the USGA revoking his amatuer status.
Greg Norman had purchased the course his high school practiced on and Norman was in town checking out the course. He took a picture with Harmon and the picture ended up in a magazine. The USGA assumed, by mistake, that Brian had been compensated the picture. They resolved it quickly though and he went on to win the JrAm. The next year he received a sponsers exemption for the MCI Heritage Classic, and actually played a practice round with Norman, at Norman's request. He did miss the cut unfortunately.
Shame he lost the afternoon match today, especially after winning in the morning 6&5 against his UGA teammate.
