Did any of you catch Paula Creamer at the Solheim Cup press conference, saying that she was looking forward to it and that the Europeans were "going to get beat" ? I thought it was great stuff. Golf needs a bit more of that sort of thing, IMO. But from the reaction of her teammates, I don't think they approved.
Nice attitude....but obviously coming from a rookie. I guess it could be taken as a sign of disrespect, but then again, I still like the fact that someone is throwing a little 'tude out there....who knows what effect it will have, but still....at least someone is acting like they expect to win.
What was she supposed to say....that she didn't expect to beat the Euros? Women's golf needs all the attention it can get and if a rookie stating that she expects her team to win draws attention to the event, then more power to her. I didn't see a clip of her making her comments but just going by what's been posted here, what's the problem? I suggest Captain Lehman bring her in as a motivational speaker for his boys when the time comes!
What do you expect in this day and age god forbid you say anything that might be inflammatory or not pc. Who cares, like leaguegolf says, womans golf needs a little attention.
A simple rookie mistake.
You should NEVER give an opponent (especially in teams) a rallying point. It doesnt matter if YOU, as a single competetor can back it up, the whole opposing team will draw inspiring fire from comments such as this. Paula's teamates will face a fired up team regardles of Paula's confidence - why draw the fire on everyone?
I dont imagine she intended to raise her profile with those words and so I say again; a simple rookie mistake.

I don't consider it her comments a "mistake" at all. She's a competitor and she said exactly how she feels about WINNING. Creamer is young but these women are adults and if they still need a competitor's words to "draw inspiring fire from" then they aren't prepared to play their best to start with. Do you really think that the European team will try harder after hearing Creamer's comments, or that they weren't thinking the same exact thing about their own team? Would a European player think, "I've done all I can to get myself ready to play but now Creamer's comments have taken me to another level?"
It may make good print and help raise the interest level for the Solheim Cup but I doubt the Euros themselves gave it a second thought.
Sure, Paula's comments could be perceived as a knock against the European team, but I see nothing wrong with a show of confidence in her teammates. I guess we'll find out what happens in the aftermath of her words beginning today.
I'm well versed in the art of "bulletin board material", but c'mon guys, this is GOLF. The only way it might burn the US is if the Euros take to smack talking on the course, and even then, it's all in Creamer's lap. And I really don't see it being anymore than greeting her on the first tee and saying "Nice to meet you, so you're going to beat me, huh? Good luck with that." Golf is too sportsmanly (sportspersonly?) of a game for a competitor to be standing over every shot her opponent makes and remind her of some comment she made in a press conference.
It's not like football bulletin board quotes where you say something dumb and they get in your head with words and hits for 60 minutes.
Early in the matches, it looks like Paula's pairing is doing OK...a 1 UP lead...overall, the US leads three matches, Europe one (but a formidable 3 UP lead). Interestingly, Annika and her partner are trailing...
I agree with tonyg... this is golf. It's not as if you can get fired up and knock someone on their behind. I like her attitude. I think the ladies game in the US is really looking up, with her, Pressel & Wie coming up. I just wish Lopez had picked Pressel with one of her captain's picks.
Bulletin "board" material works both ways.
When I competed a lot, I made sure I got it across to my opponents that I was coming for them. If it fired them up more. Even better, because usually if I still "stumped" them in the first few minutes (running, wrestling, basketball, whatever) it usually deflated them just as fast!!! All that "emotion" is just a "killer" sometimes. LOL
Maybe the Euros will up their "gamesmanship" a little bit to mess with her (mix up the number and length of conceded putts a bit, etc.), but I can't imagine that even at 19 someone playing at that level hasn't seen all the tricks before.
Then again, they could wait until the match is on the line, and as they walk to the next tee start telling their caddy a very funny joke, and time the punchline for right as Creamer's teeing it up...
Of course, that would mean finding a European with a sense of humor, but....
Monty...down by three after two rounds of '97 Masters
"I wanna piece of Tiger Woods"
You know the rest
I'm one of those that's not a big fan of trash talking before an event... whatever it is... golf, football, what have you.
Forget firing up the opponents(that goes without saying)... but it puts more undue pressure on the one that stated it and also her teammates to "get her off the hook". And being a rookie...Creamer is gonna have enough pressure as it is.
