Hi prime was before my time, but I certainly remember him on the senior tour, still with that great putting stroke. He won a couple of times on Long Island in the Lightpath Classic, so he should be known around here.
I saw him at least once, about 40 years ago, when I was a kid attending the Philadelphia Golf Classic (subsequently re-named as the IVB Classic or something). Main thing I remember is how tall he was. And yet there was a gentleness to him, also. Sorry to learn of his passing.
I think it was George Archer who would win bets on the putting green in this way. He'd take 2 balls, put them about, I dunno, say 25 feet from a hole, and bet someone (someone gullible, probably) that he could sink both balls using only 3 strokes. So naturally the pigeon thinks, "That means he's going to make a 25-footer; I'll take that bet." When the guy takes the bet, George putts both balls side by side and hits them with the same stroke. Naturally, each ball lags up to tap-in distance and George wins the bet.
That's sad news, he was too young. I saw him in person at a senior event in the late 90s. I took particular notice since he's the same height as I am. He sure played some great golf.
