Surprise, surprise...Tiger claims 7th POY

Looks like Tiger has clinched his record setting 7th POY according to various sources eclipsing Tom Watson's six.('77-'80,'82 and '84)

Tiger has accumulated 180 points, based on five victories that include the Masters, British Open, Buick Invitational, Ford Championship at Doral and the WGC-NEC Invitational. He also is the leading money winner and leads the chase for a record-breaking sixth Vardon Trophy. Woods earned 50 bonus points in July for making the British Open his second Major triumph of the year.

The mentioned 50 bonus points are awarded to players with more than one Major championship in the same year, and an additional 25 points for each additional Major championship. Points are tabulated from Jan. 1 through The Tour Championship, ending Nov. 7.

Tiger won the Vardon Trophy five consecutive times from 1999-2003. The final Vardon Trophy standings will be announced Nov. 7, 2005. As we all know, the Vardon is awarded to the lowest adjusted scoring average based on a minimum of 60 rounds of PGA tour sanctioned events.

A look at the POY standings through the Valero Texas Open ending 9/25/05...

Player Victory

1. Tiger Woods 90 20 20 50 180
(Buick Invitational, Doral, The Masters, British Open, WGC - NEC Invitational
2. Phil Mickelson 60 16 15 91
(FBR Open, AT&T Pebble Beach, BellSouth Classic, PGA Championship)
3. Vijay Singh 40 18 18 76
(Sony Open, Houston Open, Wachovia Championship, Buick Open)
4. Kenny Perry 20 10 10 40
(Bay Hill Invitational, Bank of America Colonial)
5. Jim Furyk 10 12 14 36
(Western Open)
T6. Michael Campbell 30 30
(U.S. Open)
T6. David Toms 10 14 6 30
(WGC - Accenture Match Play Championship)
8. Fred Funk 20 6 26
(The Players Championship)
9. Justin Leonard 20 1 21
(Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Fedex St. Jude Classic)
10. Padraig Harrington 20 20
(Honda Classic, Barclays Classic)

Ah yes. It looks like we finally have a clarification on how much the Majors are worth. I was thinking 2.5 or 3 times a regular PGA tour event. Apparently it is 3 times.

Case in points...

A)Tiger's 90 points for victories....

Buick Invitational - 10
Doral - 10
Masters - 30
British Open - 30
NEC - 10

Add those up=90 points.

B)Looking at Phil's 60 points for victories....

FBR - 10
At&T Pebble Beach - 10
Bell South - 10
PGA - 30

Their's your 60.

C)Vijay's 4 wins equalled 40 points.

Also see The Players Championship is worth 20 points(Fred Funk).

Atta boy Tiger.

Congratulations to the great, legendary Tiger! The best golfer ever!

When I first started following the PGA TOUR closely, in 1993, I decided to pick a talented up-and-comer as the guy I would root for. You always need a favorite. So I went with The Mick. He was new to the TOUR and I was, too. I really thought Phil would become the #1 player in the world.

I also used to marvel at Jack Nicklaus' accomplishments. I was sure we'd never again see anyone who would dominate golf the way Jack did for so long. And then the great Tiger Woods hit the scene. It's been a great pleasure and a thrill watching Tiger's career evolve.
