I wish I had had my camera yesterday...I could have caught Dana Quigley standing on the 16th tee waiting for the group in front to clear, talking on his cell phone.

For me, I don't really hate cellphones. I think that the cell phone is probably one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century, honestly. BUT, how and when people uses it really bothers me. I get cut off on the road daily, by some idiot that thinks his/her conversation with whomever is more important than driving safely in their 2 1/2 ton SUV!!! That's what I hate. On the golf course, it's really not too bad unless I'm in my backswing and a buddy's phone goes off. OR, one day, I'm waiting to tee off on #9 and the guy on the green gets a phone call while putting the flag back in the cup, and stands there for 4 more minutes because he cannot walk and talk on the phone at the same time. I even yelled up, and said hey do you mind--he turned his back to me so. . .I nailed that 3wood within 10 feet of him all the while screaming "4 you idiot--4!!!"
I always carry my cell phone with me....on the course its on vibrate, I hate it when someone calls me just to delay my shots and i tell em "hey im golfin i gotta get off here"....they just keep talkin...so i usually hang up...I hate getting calls on the course but I like to have it for emergencies and what not.....Plus my grandma is in the hospital so if something happens i'll know and i'll be able to leave.......
Personally I love my cell so I can't hate cell phones. But I hate a lot of people who have it glued to their ear, like I hate the people who go through Drive Thru while smoking (and chatting on their cell phones, of course), ordering with the cigarette IN THEIR MOUTHS, and don't leave the speakerbox because they're having a discussion on their cell. Funny thing is we can hear what they're saying.
I've had to live with the darn thing for years because of my work. I do the same thing on the course that I do during business meetings. Turn the ringer off and check for voice mail messages when it doesn't interrupt others. I can then chose if it's really important to call back right then. On those rare occaisions that an immediate call back is required I quietly walk away from my group to call making sure I don't slow play down. Plus...it's hard to tell your boss you are at a business meeting if he hears a "thwack" or "fore" in the background.
I carry mine in silent mode and check it once on the front, at the turn, and once on the back. My whole family knows my system but if they really need to reach me, they will call the starter and he'll walkie talkie the marshal and he'll let me know I have an emergency... It works!
Dana Quigley should know better - I'm sure he'd be delighted if someone in the gallery had a loud ring while he was bent over a putt for the Senior Open.
Unless you're a doctor or similar (or perhaps a father-in-waiting!) the cell phone should be available but on silent ring - any other conversations only with playing companions permission.
Those of us old enough to remember lfe before cell phones still do not understand why they are compulsive to many people. I'm sure people use them out of boredom. 99.9% of calls are not life changing/emergencies ,so why do people insist on having them on all the time. Dana Quigley should have had a two shot penalty or DQ for using one on th ecourse.
If he was standing on the tee box waiting for the fairway to clear....BIG DEAL....Its only a problem if you leave the ringer on and constantly chat with every little buddy....its no big deal to me if someone has one and checks it occasionally while your waiting, time to hit and they say "gotta go" and hang up........they other day a guy in my cart had one and i rang 2 times in 3 holes, we got on the tee of # 4 and he asked how far the creek was and i told close enough for me to throw his phone into if it rang again. He turned it off and put in the bag without a word.

I bet he was talking with his broker. Can't blame him.
I think cell phones have NO PLACE ON A GOLF COURSE. Period.
If you need to take a call, you shouldn't be golfing.
That's about THE most obnoxious thing on earth.
Carrying a cell phone 24/7 is a job requirement for many of us, one which was instituted long after we started playing golf. So we're supposed to just quit playing ? There is no excuse for them to be ringing on the course, though. If you're important enough to be required to carry a cell, then you should have one with a vibrate option and stick it.... well, put it somewhere you'll feel it as soon as it goes off.
Who cares if you need it or not? If you want to have your cell phone on the golf course, be my guest! Set it to Vibrate, don't hold me up chatting to your buddy on the other line and don't talk too loudly or too often.
IMO there are a lot more irritating things on the course than cell phones and I don't see why it's such a big issue to so many people here.

Well here's the thing - fine, you need it for work. BUT, don't answer it when your buddies call. I've NEVER seen somone say, "Sorry guys, business call, I have to take it." I HAVE, however heard, "Hey, Charley! I'm on the 8th tee, about to use that club I just bought... blah blah blah"
Seriously - if you need it for business on the course, only answer your business calls. Call your friends back later.
