Is anyone else sick and tired of hearing about the "long" schedule the PGA prima donnas have to play. Our local paper (Chicago) carried the story about Finchem's announcement scheduled for today. Part of that announcement is to respond to players interest in shortening the season.
Mickelson played in 21 tournaments so far in 2005. In only 3 months did he play in 3 tournaments. I should be so lucky as to have a work schedule like that. He made a lot of money on and off the golf course. I understand that golfers should be paid like any professional athlete but he's not going to get me to throw him any pity party.
The wolves (TV and the PGA "elite") are taking over the hen house. I pity the guys that struggle to keep their card. I'm spending more of my time next season watching Nationwide, Hooters and any of the other developmental tours. Comments??
Yeah I agree, how long, you have to be kidding me!!! My work season is each and every week, sure I have vacation/personal time, but it's each and every week and no where near the pay they get for a job well done!
The only reason I kind of think the season is too long, is that there are too many tournaments and the fields are watered down and not as good as compared to if there were less tournaments. But I agree, if they complain that the season is too long, I tell them to come back to reality and join the real world for 1 year.
Are you required to practice your job on days off? Everyone knows that being a tour players is a great gig, but I don't think we give them enough credit for their talent and how hard they work at the job. Their job doesn't just start at the first tee and end after the rounds done.

I don't quite understand either. By PGA regulation a tour pro only has to play about 17 tournaments a year unless they get an exemption. They can pick and choose when they want play and which tournaments they want to play. So they have a lot of flexibility. Theoritically it's possible to a tour pro to play the minimum amount of tourments and if he makes enough money he can take the rest of the season off. Now how many pro sports aside from tennis allow for that amount of flexibility?
Less tournaments mean better competition and I'm all for it. Comparing a professional golfer's work schedule to your own is just silly. You can make the same comparison with any professional athlete or top entertainer. Their worlds are different than ours. Always have been, always will be.
Whether we like it or not the PGA Tour is competing with football in the Fall and that's a battle the Tour has never come close to winning. Sponsors and sponsor money is what drives the PGA Tour and in case you haven't noticed, the Tour has lost a few big names in recent years.
What's wrong with changing the schedule to entice more top players to play? What they're doing now just isn't working. These Fall events are only noteworthy for the guys trying to gain, or retain, a Tour Card for next year. I'm a real golf fan and I have a hard time watching the lower tier guys playing in meaningless tournaments. Apparently I'm not the only one.
I'd like to see the top players play each other in more tournaments and I think this is a step in the right direction. As for the wolves taking over the hen house.........When it comes right down to it, what professional sport isn't run by the players/wolves?
When you're 135th on the money list you enter every tournament you can and wish there were more.
When you're 135th on the money list you're lucky to be playing at all and I certainly don't want have to watch your sorry behind when I tune in on the weekend to watch the best players in the world.
1. It keeps the status quo. I think they need to go from top 125 to top 115 to give Nationwide and q-school qualifiers some opportunities to succeed.
2. You can win 4 majors and not make the Tour Championship. That is really stupid. I know they want players to participate right before the event, but I think the PGA is trying way too hard.
3. The Players Championship is trying way too hard to be a major. We don't need five majors. I like the Players being in March.

The top 20 Nationwide guys already get in and the one week wonders of Q-School rarely, if ever, keep their Tour card. Why water down the product any more than it already is? The Nationwide Tour is the place for the not quite ready for prime time players to show they belong on the PGA Tour by finishing in the top 20.
4 majors would certainly put you well above 30th on the money list, in any case scenario.***
The Player's Championship is a great tournament and historically has the strongest field of the year. That being said, don't worry. There will never be a 5th Major.
***After reading Finchem's proposed changes that put you into the Tour Championship based on a few select tournaments and not the money list, I can see how this could happen. I'm not sure that more early and mid-season tournaments won't suffer as the players "save" themselves for this so called Play-off.
