Is Colin Montgomerie A Hall Of Famer?

With 30 career European Tour victories, eight European Tour Order Of Merit titles and his Ryder Cup heroics, it certainly can not be denied that Colin Montgomerie has had a more than stellar golfing career.

But there are some glaring blank spots on Colin's resume. He has never won a major championship and, in 114 attempts, Colin has never won on the PGA TOUR. Do you think Colin Montgomerie is a Hall-Of-Famer?

I have voted yes - if you look at the International ballot criteria, Monty clearly is overqualified. There is some sort of points system there, with a minimum of 50 needed - I make Monty's score near 100.

Very few people outside USA have any interest in the Hall of Fame . I find it difficult to agree that someone who has never won on US soil should be accepted into the USA HAll of Fame.

However, if you look at this season, Monty has won nearly $1.5m in USPGA 'recognised' events. All six of them. He would have finished just outside the top 50 having played only 6 events. That's $250,000 per event.

I voted yes, easily, just based on his dominance of the European Tour. The lack of a win over here and no major is certainly a hole in his record, but I think what he's accomplished more than makes up for it.

I voted yes too. With all the European wins and the 6 or 7 Order of Merits he has won, he definitely deserves to be in.

I think that Colin Montgomerie should be in the Hall of Fame.

Would you put a great minor league baseball player in the Baseball Hall of Fame? Some would consider the European tour golf's minor league.

Actually I was just spouting off, Colin can go in the hall of fame, just a really small exhibit.

How often do minor league teams beat the so called Majors? I make four out of last five.

I say no because he has not won in world class events. Sure he has 8 order of merits, but he was playing the equivelant of the Nationwide tour.

On a side note, what is the "criteria" for getting an invitation to the Hall of Fame? Why did Vijay get invited before Tiger. Sure Tiger has not been around as long but he has more than double the credentials than Vijay. I would like to see them go to a structured criteria like the LPGA has. At least then if someone does not get invited then they know why.

Its strange how the minor league as you call it has made the major league look like a bunch of weekend hackers in the last few ryder cups.!!!he he

As for monty, winning 8 order of merit tittles is just an outstanding model of consistency. And any hall of fame should have him in there. Winning a major is just four days in your life there are plently of examples of golfers who have only won one major, and some where that was there only tittle on any tour. Monty hasn't won a major because he can't putt when it matters so much to him. I would even bet money on him winning one next year, his confidence is back up and when it is he can be a great player.

You've got to be kidding Pistol. I counted about a dozen majors won by current European Tour members ... throw in Faldo and you have a half-dozen more. How many majors have any of the Nationwide/Nike/whatever-its-been-called graduates won in the entire history of the tour ? It isn't even close.

BTW, here's the WGHOF criteria for PGA or Champions Tour members -

At least 40 years old
Member 10 years
10 TOUR wins, or 2 wins among Masters, U.S. Open,
British Open, PGA Championship, and THE PLAYERS Championship
Champions Tour member five years
20 wins between TOUR, Champions Tour, or
5 wins among above listed, plus U.S. Senior Open, JELD-WEN Tradition, PGA Seniors' Championship, FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship
Require votes on 65 percent of ballots returned

So the only tournament outside USA that counts is the Open. Now do you wonder whyt he rest of the world has no interest in the USA Hall of Fame

Monty is in based on his golfing accomplishments and also because of an interesting "test" I heard someone apply.
Is his name recognizable to the "casual" fan?

Let's see how many Monty gets a yes on:

At least 40 years old - Yes
Member 10 years - No
10 TOUR wins, or 2 wins among Masters, U.S. Open, - No
British Open, PGA Championship, and THE PLAYERS Championship - No
Champions Tour member five years - No
20 wins between TOUR, Champions Tour, or - No
5 wins among above listed, plus U.S. Senior Open, JELD-WEN Tradition, PGA Seniors' Championship, FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship - No
Require votes on 65 percent of ballots returned - ?

That's 1 yes and 6 no. If Monty is eligible then so am I.

Of those dozen that you counted, how many are PGA members and yes, those that have won majors MAY be qualified for HOF status?

Majors won by NationWide/Nike grads - Tom Lehman, David Duval, Jim Furyk, David Toms, Ben Curtis

Maybe Monte should play the Nationwide tour. It looks like he would stand a better chance of getting HOF cridentials.
