PGA Grand Slam of Golf: Alternative Format and Field

Greetings --

Please share your thoughts on this little idea of mine ....

Alternative Grand Slam of Golf invitational criteria to allow for a field of 10 rather than 4.
I'm well aware that this runs completely counter to the current format.

A: Winners of the Masters, U.S. Open, British Open, PGA Championship, Players Championship, WGC-Accenture Match Play, WGC-NEC Invitational, WGC-American Express Championship and the Tour Championship.

B: If not otherwise eligible, the winner of any official PGA Tour event (how many doesn't matter), chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

C: If not otherwise eligible, and if needed to complete a field of 10, winners of any official PGA Tour event (how many doesn't matter), chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

FYI and reference: November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List -- http://fgf2001.100megsfree3.com/golf...ist_110605.txt

The 2005 Qualifiers

1. David Toms (Accenture Match Play) -- Toms would certainly be out of the event, due to his recent heart procedure
2. Fred Funk (Players Championship)
3. Tiger Woods (Masters, British Open, WGC-NEC Invitational, WGC-AmEx Championship)
4. Michael Campbell (U.S. Open)
5. Phil Mickelson (PGA Championship)
6. Bart Bryant (Tour Championship)
7. Vijah Singh (Event Winner, #2 Money List)
8. Jim Furyk (Event Winner, #4 Money List)
9. Kenny Perry (Event Winner, #6 Money List)
10. Retief Goosen (Event Winner, #7 Money List)

Alternates -- Added to field in case of any pre-event withdrawals. Chosen in priority order of rank on the November 6 2005 PGA Tour Official Money List.

A-1. Sergio Garcia (Event Winner, #10 Money List)
Garcia would have replaced David Toms, who is recovering from a recent heart procedure.

A-2. Justin Leonard (Event Winner, #12 Money List)
A-3. Padraig Harrington (Event Winner, #14 Money List)
A-4. Sean O'Hair (Event Winner, #18 Money List)
A-5. Ben Crane (Event Winner, #19 Money List)

WOW, you given this a lot of thought. I somewhat agree 4 is too small a field, but on the other hand, it does represent the 4 Major winners.

I think you have something there...but it needs to be an event in it's own right, not a revision of the PGA Grand Slam. Definitely an event I'd watch/attend.

Would this proposed Grand Slam still be a 36 hole stroke play event?

Greetings ...

36-holes, at least. If there was a week somewhere that you could hold it Monday thru Thursday, then it would be 72 holes.

I like it, how does one go about submitting to the PGA Tour this suggestion? I'd give it a whirl! What's there to lose, it'd be interesting to hear a response from them too!

I'm glad that someone has given a bit of thought to this.
However, there is one MAJOR flaw.

It is pga, pga, pga and yes pga orientated.
What about the European Order of Merit Winner for instance?

It's all good, up to the point when you pick the major winners and WGC events. However when you go to the point on your list at number 7, then all that counts is PGA performance. Choosing on this is fine for the tour championship, but not a grand slam of golf, which is supposed to be the best, not the best in the US tour.

Greetings ...

Thanks for all the replies. Your various comments were echoed by posters at other sites.

I've taken note of a little item here and at other bulletin boards where I've posted my hypothetical 10-rather-than-4 suggestion.

The "little item" is that not one person has mentioned Ben Crane, one of the alleged slowpokes of the tour, who is one of the alternates shown back in post-1 of this thread.

Probably a good thing that Mr. Crane didn't make the field. TNT's boring coverage might have been prolonged that much longer!

No offense or anything, but it is called the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

100% correct. It is.
However, I think the grand slam is the most important bit.
The whole spirit of it is the 4 majors isn't it?
So in that case I'll completely change my mind and say all the world golf championship winners should not be allowed.

If it is called grand slam, then take the 2nd places in majors, or the most consistant players in majors. How about that?

Don't worry LA Golf, I get bored very quickly.
- I've been in the Martina Hingis, was she actually any good discussion.
- Is Monty really any good?
- Is Christina Aguillera just a big ****?

I've been in all the discussions.

Once I get into an argument, I find it hard to back down, especially if someone is getting criticised unfairly.
