And you know the obvious ones: Tiger, Freddie, Phil, etc... So don't even.
For some reason I enjoy watching Scott McCarron. If you've seen his Playing Lessons With the Pros you might know what I mean. He's a down-to-earth, athletic-type that seems to rely heavily on that athletic ability to survive. Granted, he hasn't been making headlines lately, but I just like his attitude and his style.
And I appologize, as a newcomer to GR, if this has been a thread in the past. But I love watching The Tour and figured maybe it was time for a new favorite player thread...
Don't worry about duplicate threads, they all over the place...I'd have to say Rocco Mediate, he's a local from around here and I've seen him in interviews and followed him when they held he played at Laurel Valley and was golfing with Robert Allenby (eventual winner) of the 2001 Pennsylvania Classic.
You want to talk about "down to earth" and "likeable" guys, he's the definition of it...plays with the gallery too.
Well, I maybe crossing into "obvious ones" territory, but Jim Furyk would be my pick. I've enjoyed watching him for years, and his recent success and solid play just confirm why.
Another guy I wish was doing better, and we got to see more often, is Lee Janzen. But probably because we were classmates in high school, and used to get in trouble in Physics class for acting up too much!
Tim Herron. "Lumpy" (5'10"; 210 lbs, reportedly) is a good-natured guy who can golf his ball. Got himself into the top 30 on the PGA money list this year, pulling in a cool $2M, so he did alright.
Once asked, "How can you bring Tiger Woods back to the pack?", Lumpy answered, "Short of violence? Maybe give him more chocolate chip cookies."
I'd have to say Kenny Perry. He seems like he's a really nice guy and I don't think he's forgotten where he's come from, if you know what I mean. Another good golf quote: Someone asked Sandy Lyle about 9-10 years ago, "What do you think about Tiger Woods?" Lyle responded, "I don't know, I've never played there." LOL Simp
OK. Favorite player to watch: Davis Love. I know he's one of the top players but how can you ever get sick of that swing? I watched him here during the PGA at Hazeltine a few years ago and was amazed at how such a slow, effortless swing from a little skinny dude could create such power. Trying to mimic that.
As for favorite attitude, Steve Elkington. That Aussie is hilarious! Ever hear the "I saw cat" story? He also hit on my wife at same PGA Championship. I took it as a compliment.
Sean O'Hair, I actually got to help run a clinic and he was one of the guests of honor. Such a nice guy, he was standing around one of the lines to have your swing checked and one of the other teaching pros didn't look up and handed him the driver saying "you're next." Sean just took the club and ripped it about 280 down the middle, the teacher looked up and went "Oh **** you're Sean." He just smiled and looked at the ground.

I've never thought of someone that's 6' 3" as "little skinny dude"...he may not be fat or thick, but I'd hardly call him "little skinny dude"...isn't that someone that's about 5' 5"....135?
It may sound a little lame, but I really do like almost all the guys. They are all kind of cool in their own ways, I suppose, and I never root against any of them.
But Scott McCarron is definitely one of those guys I have a special liking for. He seems so cool and stylish. I just wish Scotty would get a little more serious about his game. He really could be one of the top guys on TOUR if he tried a little more.
I'm still rooting for Mike Weir even though he had a rough year. I didn't follow golf until this year so I'm hoping I get to see him play like he can next year.
I root for the "feel good" stories like Sean O'Hair and Jason Gore, some young guns like Luke Donald and Charles Howell III, and some of the older guys hanging on such as Fred Funk (big props for his performance at the Skins Game).
