I get the golf channel as part of my already overpriced cable package. It will do them good to get into the spotlight. Hopefully they will trim down the infomercials than constantly play.
I don't like it, mostly because, well, I don't get TGC right now...
I would have to pay more than I currently pay, which is stretching it for a college budget, to get TGC.
I would be willing to if I didn't have to buy all the garbage channels that came with the package TGC is in.
I hope the first folks they call up are Nick Faldo and Paul Azinger for the analysis...with those two, I don't care who'll be doing the "play by play."
The contracts that were agreed on today do not include coverage of the 4 Grand Slam Major Championships - which are not run by the PGA Tour.
Currently, the TV coverage for the Majors is as follows --
Masters (USA and CBS)
U.S. Open (ESPN and NBC)
British Open (TNT and ABC)
PGA Championship (TNT and CBS)
Also, the "Cups" Coverage is as follows --
Presidents Cup (TNT and NBC)
Ryder Cup (USA and NBC)
If USA and ESPN elect to drop out of ALL golf coverage after 2006, it'll be interesting to see if TGC and TNT go after those packages. One thing should be kept in mind - USA and NBC are owned by the same company, so USA is not necessarily "totally out" just yet.
And what is to be the fate of the ABC-ESPN announcers after 2006? Ian Baker-Finch, Andy North, Judy Rankin, Paul Azinger, Nick Faldo, Bill Kratzert and Billy Ray Brown are sure to be grabbed up by somebody, while Peter Alliss might be playing his swan song in 2006.
Another thing to keep in mind. Although she's not hinted at what her future plans are (other than family), Jennifer Mills, recently retired from the Golf Channel, could conceivably surface on a part-time basis.
We'll just wait and see.
Meanwhile, a "TV casualty" ---
Beginning 2007, the Bob Hope Classic will be seen only on cable, on the Golf Channel.
Hard to believe that this venerable tournament will no longer be on broadcast TV. Has it really lost that much prestige since Mr. Hope passed away?
TGC better hire some big names if they want to make it interesting, because their current annoucers for Nationwide events are not good. I wonder how many Johnny Miller's will cross over to TGC?
TGC has always been included with my expanded basic cable package through both companies I've received cable from during the 20 years I've had it, as well as USA and TNT. I'd probably add it or go another way if that weren't so.
I LOVE IT< and if we lose peter Allis is the exchange, so much the better...I just hope they DO NOT pull johhny miller into the group. the way he talks other than him, Jack and Arnie, every one else is a hack....
I get TGC with my cable package (Time Warner)......just thinking now......will they make me pay extra for that channel now that they have to pay the contract.
I don't watch golf that much, I'm out normally playing golf, so I don't think I will pay extra to get TGC.
I have TGC also, but I will miss ESPN and USA coverage. Frank-o-sport said USA is owned by NBC and we might not lose it but the article I read said golf will be exclusively on NBC, CBS, and TGC period.
How many of you currrently get the Golf Channel as part of your cable package?
How many of you will have to pay additional charges to get the Golf Channel?
Are you willing to pay extra to watch the PGA Tour?
One more question........Who will TGC hire to announce these events?
TGC is already apart of my Basic Cable package.
I would probably pay up to $5 extra a month if it wasn't a part of the basic package.
I agree with STL I think the TGC should bring in Faldo and Azinger as color guys. I think they appeal to younger golfers and they are hilarious. As far as a the play-by-play guy I would use Steve Sands who is already on the TGC.
Congrats to the Golf Channel and I look forward to watching even more of them starting in 2007!

I agree. I think Faldo and Zinger are great together.
