Meg Mallon plays perhaps the round of her life at age 41 (65), battling Annika Sorenstam (67) and Kelly Robbins (69) for the title, who were playing very well themselves; and then the battle of the amateurs between Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer ending in a tie at +1.
Then Mallon sets the record for most years betweeen Open wins at 13 when the previous record was 6!
I could ask for Michelle Wie winning, that would be cool!
I didn't get to watch any of it cause i was at work, but it sounds good. I watched the coverage on Saturday and boy are those greens sloped!
Congrats to Mallon and Congrats to Michelle Wie and Paula Creamer on the low am.
I didn't get to catch it either. That's great that someone the winner shot 65 on Sunday. I heard that it was the lowest round by a winner of the U.S. Women's Open. I wish Wie could have contended but she definitely did a good job.
I wish Michell could have contended too, but eventually she will. I think at 14, and with all the fame and attention she has garnered, it is effecting her mental game. With time and more experience she will overcome this and be the champion we all think she is capable of being. Just hope she doesn't burn out, she is awfully young. Bet you guys from Hawaii are extremely proud of her.
It's obvious from the interviews, Meg is one of the nicest people around. A good friend of mine (who's father was a golf pro) was friends with her growing up in MI and still stays in touch with her. She thinks the absolute world of Meg and it's easy to see why.
Yeah, great tournament! I'm a Sorenstam fan, but Meg Mallon really impressed me as a golfer and as a person. My morning paper quotes her as saying, "I'm incredibly proud to have my name on this trophy again. I didn't think it would ever happen again." You know she'll treasure this, not only because of her age, but also because of her disappointments in 1995 (lost 5-shot lead) and 2000 (four 3-putts on Sunday's back nine). Putter was sure not a problem yesterday!
I didn't see much, but the tournament was competitive.
Although I was not in favor of Michelle Wie getting an exemption, she proved that she belonged in the Open, and got an automatic invite to next year's - good for her.
