The comparison in Europe is the excessive earnings of the footballers. I realise their wages are not as high as the US sportsmen, but footballers earning $150,000 per week are seen as obscene.

The game struggles to support this, with TV money becoming crucial. Five different kick off times over the weekend supports tv saturation and all fans complain about the disjointed start times.

Golf is struggling to support $1m winners cheques ,and the control of the sponsors will not be to the benefit of the game, especially when Brian Davis holds off Greg Owen on a Sunday afternoon with Tiger and Phil back in joint 45th place.

More money will always be available where the sponsor gets a bigger bang for his buck, so the USA will always have that advantage ,treat it with respect or it will bite you on the butt.

I have no problem with the money they make, afterall, there are only a very few ppl in the whole world that can do what they do.

One nice thing about golfers though, if they don't produce, they suffer. No long term contracts as far as playing the tour.

Yep, I believe in USA you're over 25 millions players. Only 5 in UK and poorly 400 000 in france. That makes a great difference for the adertisers...

Everyone has to remember when trying to compare golfers to other sport pros. Golfers HAVE to earn their money and pay for their caddies expenses aswell. I was blessed to play as an amatuer in the 2002 Mercedes Benz on Muai and got to talk to a lot of pros and on expenses they can spend on average $2500. a competition on just expenses. They have to make the cut on Friday or they get ZERO $. Not like basketball, football, baseball where they get travel and hotel paid by the organization. And they don't even have to play. Yes PGA $ is big and could be less but these guys, ALL OF THEM, give back a lot to charities all over. They know they have a good life and are very willing to give back. You have to admire that.

I would say that one of the negatives of the vast money currently available on the (U.S.) P.G.A. Tour is that it could encourage a number of talented young American players into the `comfort zone` too early, or easily. Such a player may not bother venturing abroad to experience other tours and courses if he is merely comparing the prize funds. Indeed he may just settle for `a good living` as opposed to trying his hardest to win, win, win at home.

This week for example...Chris Dimarco has had a very profitable week, although he could have won more elsewhere for this weeks win (had he won in America), this win may however, be a spring board to better things for him this year with the confidence that such a win generates ! A win is a win... as they say!

...I only venture out here (now and then)to remove myself from stalker stagday and yes, I`ll admit there may be a somewhat, slight tendency to post in the Fun and Games section marginally more than the other areas ...but still close to `half-a-green-jacket` ...nonetheless...

C-B-C.....

The other tours, outside of the US, allow the payment of "Appearance Fees". This offsets the lower purses. The PGATour does not allow appearance fees.

Sure, DiMarco would've won more prize money if he would've played and won the Bob Hope. But the appearance fee makes up for it.
