Golf World's Campaigning of Daly is Shameful

This is the second month in a row that Golf World has stoopped to the tabloids level to encourage its subscribers to pressure Tom Lehman into using him for a captain's pick. If Daly wants to be on the team, let him earn it. He has more than enough talent, but he has squandered so many opportunities as he has no one to blame but himself. I emailed with the address they gave us to prmote us and said this was shameful. I will not renew my subscription if they do it one more month. I know the email address or mailing address if anyone needs it.

I'd be curious to know if/how they responded to his complaint as well.

What we have here is another sad example of a member of the media trying to affect the news instead of reporting it.

I have complained to GolfWorld about some story content in the past and have received responses from the writer of the story.

Gimmee a break.

What is so wrong with Golf World touting Daly for the Ryder Cup? I think he would be great for the Ryder Cup. He is a very talented golfer and I do think he should try his best to play his way onto the Ryder Cup but I also think he would be a great Captains pick.

But I guess you are entitled to your own opinion and you have the right to cancel your subscription to Golf World for any reason you want.

I think you're taking this waaaay to seriously. John Daly is very popular and this is just an attempt by Golfworld to tap into that. This is no different that the campaign Golf Digest ran a few years ago about cutting Monty a break from the taunting and heckling. I believe they even had buttons made up. And, if I'm not mistaken, alot of people float Daly's name for these teams whenever it's getting near time for final selections. I'm sure if Tom Lehman was upset by Golfworld's attempt to have people "influence" him, he--or at least the PGA of America--would approach Golfworld's editors.

I think Tom Lehman is capable of making his own decisions and Golf World's campaign will ultimately only be a fun "what if" for the fans to think about unless John plays well enough to make the team outright or bring his name into consideration for a spot.

The Campaigning Either way is Shameful

Golf Magazine can state their opinion about Monty and John Daly, but to create news is shameful. Furthermore, the Ryder Cup is not a popularity contest. Lehman's picks should be those who can contribute to the team, not who can draw ratings and fans.

John Daly would be far better pick than some lame vet like the Jay Haas or Curtis Strange picks

He's #57 on the points list. He has to make a big move to deserve consideration, IMO. I like JD, but it's not a popularity contest and what exactly has Big John done on the course recently or even not so recently to rate a captain's pick ?

The publishers of Golf Magazine are not fools. They know that their story about Daly will create a buzz, which in turn will sell more magazines. If Tom Lehman were the one writing the stories I'd be worried, but he's not and he never will be. Captain Lehman isn't the "shoot first and ask questions later" type. He's put his professional reputation on the line by accepting the captaincy and he's not about to risk his reputation by putting all his apples in Daly's cart.

If Daly earns enough points to make it inside the top 20 I'm sure he'll be considered. If he doesn't, he won't get a second thought from Mr. Lehman. Anything else is just wishful thinking on the part of Daly's many fans.

If the USA team gets beaten like it did 4 years ago, it won't be drawing either ratings or fans...

Just think of JD in a best ball with someone who can hit fairways consistently? Let the other guy dink one out into the short grass, and then let Long John let loose! I think his length and his short game would make him incredibly useful.

Take Daly's greatest asset, the long tee ball, right out his hands and have a guy that was 151st in GIRs last year hitting the second shot. Yeah....that's what I'd do too!

Why would that take the tee ball out of his hands? So say he plays 4-ball - you can't tell me there isn't some way to exploit his length in the Ryder Cup.
