Arrow Phil Mickelson's 48" Driver?

I heard he implemented a 48 inch driver for the FBR.
No wonder he sprayed it all over the place. I was just curious if you guys think it was a wise decision?

If he learns how to hit it straight then it might be a good idea because a lot of the young kids are really bombing it & the courses are getting a little long.

Most of the top players are implementing the longer shafts to pick up yards...and it shows. For all the hoopla about Holmes' 354 yard drive on 18 Sunday, Phil's drive on that hole was within 10 yards of his. Vijay uses a 47" shaft in his driver. Even Tiger is using a longer shaft in his driver, although I think it's less than either of those guys. Except in majors, spraying it all over the place doesn't really hurt your chances at winning the event.

Tiger's, on the green, 350+ drive on #17 at Dubai tells me he's not overly concerned about the length of the new guys. They're all looking for more Driver length. Tiger included.

I truly enjoy watching players bomb it 330+
I also enjoy watching them hit it all over the place.
I just think it a little odd that the biggest, strongest & most flexible guys are the ones who use these distance enhancements. Guys like Fred Funk should be using this stuff. Last I heard Tiger used a 44 & 3/4 " driver.

What is the legal limit? How much distance are you supposed to get per inch added?

I had to go the opposite way: from a 50" driver down to 48"". It has cost me about 15 yards. A few years ago Chi Chi Rodriguez said that every extra inch on a driver would yield 7 yards when hit properly. By the way, 48" is the limit on golf club length, except for putters.

Yeap. 359 to the flag. The ball ended at the back of the green. 370 yards and he did it when he was trailing and needed a birdie to have any chance for a play off.

Yep. And I think Tiger's got another 20-30 yards in reserve even on his longest drives that we see him hit.

Remember when he drove the green at Dural last year over water??? That sucker was 360 all carry.

I think the deal is that Phil is getting so fat he needs the extra length just to see the ball!

48" is the legal limit according to the USGA rules of golf as far as length per inch No idea.

VJ is a very tall person so the longer shaft may be appropriate for his body physique (taller than Phil) . Tiger on the other hand I heard that he has kept his Lengths and Lies the same since his University days and his driver is only 1/2-1" over standard.

Does the shaft only have to be 48' or does that also include the clubhead?
