It was rumored that Calvin Peete used to withdraw from tournaments when he was having a bad round in order to keep his stroke average down. He won the Vardon Trophy in 1984, after losing it to Raymond Floyed by 1/100 of a stroke the year before.
I don't know if these rumors were true, just something I heard.
