Yes, everyone that lost today gets 9th place points and everyone that loses in the quarter-finals gets 5th place points.
...to earn 9th place points in an `ordinary` tournament, a player would have to beat at least (approx) 147 golfers over four days...and yet a player here can earn `9th place points` by beating just two golfers...over just two days!!!

...is this correct?
Yes, it's correct. Please keep in mind that a player with two wins in this tournament has bested 48 of the world's best players and not a field of 130+ lesser ranked players.

...still seems fishy to me!!!! Regardless of the `bested` 48 players, the fact remains that the player is awarded 9th place points for beating just two players (and that`s the important point)...and by beating them over just two days, as opposed to the usual four. It doesn`t seem right to me......maybe matchplay is simply not conducive to the world ranking points system...IMO.

Anytime you play a tournament that has the top 64 players in the world, and you're still playing when 48 have been eliminated, you should be highly rewarded. There's always points available in Tucson for those that aren't good enough to make the match play field.
BTW.....That loud groan was from the network execs after the top stars lost today. It looks like the LPGA may gain more viewers than they thought!
I'd prefer to watch the LPGA, But the WGC finishes an hour before the LPGA starts so double the golf . I prefer the LPGA or Ladies Euro for some reason but ANYWAY...
Wow, what carnage today for the top seeds. So much for some good weekend viewing......when Retief Goosen is your top draw, viewers would probably flock to watch curling instead!
Thats all part of the show with Tiger. He has always known how to take it and dish it right back with a night capper. Believe me they will be joking together on the next time around when they are paired together. When I played as the Los Angeles Amatuer Champion in the 2002 Mercedes Benz classic in Maui Tiger sat at our table for the evening pairings dinner and he said " no reason to let people get under your skin, just verbally beat them up to see what kind of character they are". He was jabbing other pro's with comments as well as they did him. It was a good time for all

The networks are praying right now for Goosen and Love. They might not bring in Tiger Woods or Mickelson like ratings, but they'll bring in better ratings than Zach Johnson or Geoff Ogilvy. I'm basically watching this for 2 reasons....a) I like Tom Lehman and am pulling for him and 2) I love watching Retief Goosen swing a golf club. IMO, one of the sweetest swings in all of golf.
Would also be nice to see David Howell win and get some recognition. Guy's one of the more underrated players in the world.
