Someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed this evening?
Gimme the best players in the world in a fun format over a bunch of nobodies in a second-rate event any day. The only thing that could pry my attention from the Matchplay with a check on the LPGA event now and then this weekend is if David Duval were to be on the first page of the leaderboard...and that most likely ain't happening given his start.
Tucson can give a bunch of players more money than they would have made were the Match Play not on. And possibly afford a win to a player who really needs one. But, the Match Play has the best in the world on the course. I love the match play format because it brings in an additional factor for the competition. I wish the pros played a few more of these. Think I'll watch both of the tournaments.
Match Play needs to find a go for broke type course. It would be exciting to see Match Play at a TPC at Sawgrass type of ending. I think the Match Play should be played at a Cabo Del Sol Course.
I would rather watch a golf event that can impact different players schedules for the next few months.
The question is can you endure the USA Netowrks coverage of the tournament. I taped yesterday's coverage and what you basically end up with is a collection of golf shots and commericials. They don't really do a lot to develop a "story line" to keep to make watching more compelling. And at least for Thursday's and Friday's coverage expect commericials every three to five minutes.
Maybe next year the Golf Channel will carry this tournament and we'll get better coverage. Tucson National is a beautiful golf course although not the most difficult to play and there are some interesting guys competing.
I will watch both if I can - I love watching match play golf.
Both match play and stroke play have their advantages. I love seeing a stroke play tournament when 3,4, or 5, guys have a chance to win it on the back nine on a Sunday afternoon. Match play on the overy hand is "Hand To Hand Combat" it's do or die and once you get the final pairing it's all about the two guys facing each other. It can be a classic duel or a non-event.
The first reshuffling for the non-exempt players occurs after this event. This ends the West Coast swing, which will determine if they play Doral, Honda, or Atlanta (maybe Bay Hill). It sets the pace for the swing between the Masters and U.S. Open. The second reshuffle occurs after the Masters.
I'm suprised the USPGA hold an event in 'competition' with a WGC event. Other tours have more respect.Same with Majors.
"Other Tours" can't support a tournament when the majority of it's stars are playing in Majors or WGC events. That's just another testament to strength of the PGA Tour and it's fans.
Unless Nicholas Thompson, Chris Couch, Jon Mills, and Stephen Bowditch have sponsor's exemptions or Monday qualify, they will be out of the Ford Championship. I expect Bubba Watson and Nathan Green to be in the field, though they aren't listed. Same with Shane Bertsch, who is now an alternate and Henrik Bjornstadt. If Camillo Villegas isn't in the field, he will probably be in after all the reshuffle.
