I was one of the people who complained to the network through email about Gray's terribly ill timed attack on Pete Rose. It was cheap shot on national TV without tact. You cannot always just ask or say what you want in this life and not be held accountable. "Getting the scoop" should not be as important as understanding there are boundaries that shouldnt be crossed and knowing there is a better time and place where its more judicious to ask the hard questions. I am admittedly a big Pete Rose fan and in his case the shots were at him.
Regarding the incident with John Daly, it comes down to the man talking about his wife. Daly has every right to defend her and keep his thoughts private, it is none of his or our business to know anymore than that. Ive had it with Gray and his sneaky style of questioning. Golf does not need it, go to Hollywood.
hey pete rose gambled on baseball. was caught and than lied. gray told him why not admit to it. why lie. rose looked all his fans in the eye and boldly lied to us. for this as a man he deserves no support. as for daly yes he has every right to not talk about his criminal wife. but on the same token gray has the right to ask if it is affecting his play. if daly says he wishes not to discuss it fine. as for rose i think he belongs in the hall but i have no respect for anyone who can look people( people who he was pleading for their support) in the eye and flatly lie.
you guys are bleeding hearts for these athletes. I suppose you feel bad for how the mean press are badgering poor Bonds these days(**** liar) and Mcgwire last year(pompous liar) and Daly is a big boy and can say look its personal and I'd rather not discuss it

No one is shedding any tears for athletes here. Barry Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Palmero ARE the guilty ones. The allegations toward them are NOT about their personal lives or their wives. They are being accused of CHEATING the game.
Gray's line of questioning toward Daly wouldn't have made me upset if he'd have quit when it became apparent that Daly didn't appreciate the question. Gray repeated himself. THAT is where I got angry. After repeating himself, Gray was STILL looking for an answer by keeping the microphone in JD's face as he tried to walk away.
the fact that John Daly's wife is in prison for being a criminal(basically selling drugs, evading taxes and promoting an illegal gambling ring) does not seem to me to have to be off limits.

That is about their PERFORMANCE ON THE FIELD. How would you feel if you were on national TV with Jim Gray and he ambushed you about your private life? And don't say "there's nothing he could ambush me about." EVERYBODY's got something in their closet.

I dropped ESPN a note, as well. Hopefully, they got a ton of responses from the viewing public. JD didn't deserve what he got. Gray, seemingly, wants to BE the news.

Man, I'm usually the one on the message boards who doesn't have a clue, and never gets it.
Thanks for taking my place man.
Call it what you want, but "Dignity" and "Class" are two words that won't show up at Jim Gray's funeral.
Having tact, and being polite to people is not a sin, even in the news business. As someone with a journalism degree I do not support, or condone Jim Gray's conduct and line of questioning. It is inexcusable, and without merit. There is a time and a place for any question. This was not the time or the place to take a cheap shot at John Daly. Gray obviously won't be receiving a Christmas card from Daly this year.
I think that Gray's timing was wrong , but let's not feel too sorry for poor ole JD. He's made quite a fortune, playing up his the hard-living, good old boy, grip-it-&-rip-it image. I don't see anything wrong with questioning him about the down side of the path he's chosen. It wasn't the proper time or place though.
He didn't choose this path, though - this was about his wife, not him. If JD had knocked Gray on his &%$, I wouldn't have held it against him.
Well the company he keeps and chooses to marry is part of his lifestyle and the path he's chosen. Like the old saying goes "you lie down with dogs, expect to get up with fleas". Again, I agree that was not the proper time nor place for Gray's questions.
I would have to say that Jim Grey may not have a LARGE number of folks in attendance for his funeral, but i 'm sure there will be quite a few that show up afterwards to water the grass so to speak........
In light of the personal attacks Jim Gray makes on sports figures, in the future I will boycott all products advertised on any broadcast in which Jim Gray is a participant .
