I think they should enact a provision that would allow them to replace all the quarterfinalists with the losers of the prior matches...Woods-Toms, Weir-Mickelson, Singh-Dimarco and Donald-Katayama sound pretty appealing about now.

Why would you do that? In fact look at the seeds. You have four players that were seeded fifth or better still in it. Its really no different than March Madness and I don't think you'd find many college basketball fans asking for a similar provision.
If you want to increase the odds of having Tiger, Phil, Vijay, and Ernie around for the weekend than you simply cut the field to the top 32 or top 16.
Gentlemen (and ladies), this is a match play tournament. Those who couldn't pull it off are now gone, and those who could, remain.
Yes, it's a network's nightmare, but it's great for those of us who watch because we LOVE THE GAME more than the players.
Matchplay is so much more in the GB and Ireland psyche than anywhere else in the world but gets little air time, the way the US PGA is set up, with so much sponsorship, matchplay would not fit into their ideas!
Howard Clark worked out that Chad Cambell had shot an approx 70 yesterday against Tiger,s 68 but still won and Tiger never actually recorded a bogey on a hole but that is matchplay!!
Match play is all about risk and reward and playing your opponent not the score. If you look at the Woods/Campbell match , Tiger shoots 69 to Campbell's 70 and loses. It looks like Woods played better, but Woods also won a hole with an eagle and Campbell doubled another hole. In stroke play you may not attempt a shot that you would in match play. So comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges.
One thing I would like to see though, is 36 holes for each match from the third round on. It would mean shortening the field or extending the tournament, but I think 36 holes will define who is playing better than 18. At the 3rd round you get some very good match-ups and I think 36 holes would be interesting and probably strenghten the final matches with higher ranked players.
Match play just makes the movie "any given Sunday" even more valid...some days you have it and some you don't, personally I'm happy to see that I'm not the only one who can do well one day and wonder what happened to my game the next.

I love playing match play and I enjoy watching it when there are a number of concurrent matches being played. But when it gets down to the semis and the finals, there is a lot of dead air and it's only occassionaly compelling when the match(es) is/are close. Personalities do play a part, but that's only a small factor in my lack of interest ... at least as far as the WGC events are concerned.

The above statement makes just too much sense for the average "fan" to comprehend.
I love match play, but tend to watch on tv rather than travel; as the crowds get too big when following the finals.
Disappointed my friend Padraig lost out to Love.
Had a great time in 86 in particular, walking around with Barbara Nicklaus when Jack lost in the semi-finals at Wentworth to Greg Norman on the final hole; but the crowds trying to watch the final were almost impossible.
Similar problems watching Seve v Ben Crenshaw another year.
I love the mind-games tho'
Match play rocks. It's better than seeing the same old medal style tournament week in and week out. I'm against having 36 holes for the final, too long.

Yea, nothing beats a non-competitive match play Sunday final for excitement, except maybe one that's being regularly held up by the meaningless consolation match in front of them.

I'll second that. Just don't even watch golf if you're only watching it to see if Tiger gets the win. If you love the game it doesn't matter who's playing on Sunday.
