Apparently, before his match with Tiger in the 1st round of the WGC Match Play, Stephen Ames, when asked about his chances, said, "With the way Tiger's hitting it all over the place, I think I have a good chance."
Asked in the post-round news conference about whether he had heard Ames' comments and what his thoughts on them were, Tiger replied, "Nighty-night."

When asked what his reaction to those comments were, Tiger grinned and said,
"9 & 8."
That ain't what he said, though
Anyway...
Wait. I just came back to edit this - did he say "9 & 8" or "nighty-night"? I understood the latter. Dudn't matter, it was funny. Very Michael Jordanesque of Tiger.

I saw the interview......Tiger said 9 & 8. Same as saying "scoreboard" in my book.
All poor old ames said was that he would hit it from the fairway and tiger would be 50 ahead or to the right or left. He then went on to say that tiger was so good that he can still win from there. I believe it was a fair assessement of tiger's current game with the compliment on his short game. Man old tiger has a fragile ego if that got to him. But I did want to call him up half way through his match with Chad Campbell and tell him that Chad said he looked fat in red.

Yeah that's it......Tiger has a fragile ego. I think it was simply a case of every once in awhile the great ones have to put the little guys in their place. I don't think Ames will be tugging on Tiger's cape again anytime soon.
Maybe the "fat in red" comment would've fired Tiger up cuz nothing else was working.

Actually, Tiger's post match comments made me feel a little uneasy. I could never imagine a champion like Nicklaus answering a question about what another competitor said by saying essentially "scoreboard".
Ames's comments might not have been the brightest thing ever said and I'm not sure that Ames is even that well liked on tour, but if JWN had just beating him 9 & 8, Nicklaus would have said something like 'I got off to a fast start, maybe Steve wasn't quite playing up to his usual standards and it just steamrolled. I'm sure that Steve will quickly return to play at a very high level' or something to this effect. In other words, he would have downplayed Ames's statement and tried to be humble in victory, not the in-your-face look-at-the-scoreboard-and-don't-ever-comment-on-my-game-again attitude that we got from Woods.
Inside, Nicklaus might have been just as peeved as Tiger was, but he would not have shown that side to the media. That's the difference between TW and JN - not that Tiger's a bad guy, but he'll never match the class, dignity and sportsmanship of Jack Nicklaus.
