I never paid a whole lot of attention to Phil Mickleson. he just went way up in standing in my eyes. Today at Doral, Phil hit a shot that went into the crowd and hit some guys watch. Phil walked over, spoke to the guy and then handed him what appeared to be $200. I think that was a class act. Bravo Phil. I don't think he "needed" to do anything, but the sheer fact that he did speaks volumes IMHO. Once again, BRAVO PHIL!!!
I have heard rumbillings in tournemnt locker rooms that he is a bit of a phoney and that alot of things like this are for his image. I personnaly dont care but I also dont like him or think he's a class act but to each his own.
I saw that too. Phil wadded the money up and put it in the guy's hand with no fanfare. It was only after Phil had walked on down the course, that the guy unwadded the bills and you could see it was a couple of hundred dollar bills. I thought it was a very gentlemanly gesture on Phil's part. Of course, being left handed myself, I'm a bit prejudiced.
Well he can afford to do that with all the money he's making. That was really nice of him though. I know if I was that guy who got his watch dismantled, I'd be a little upset. Most people wouldn't have done that. That was very nice.
Another point worth mentioning....have you ever compared PGA touring pros with other sports stars? Look at the trash written about so many basketball, football and baseball greats with the wife beatings, immoral conduct, drugs, drunkeness, ect. Not to mention the fights and brawls of pro hockey players. But almost NEVER do you read ANYTHING negative about professional golfers. I think they are the most gentile, well mannered, well educated people in any professional sport and much more worthy of being role models than some of the slime balls found in some other sports. You can read pro golf history down thru the decades and it is always the same. They are truly gentlemen playing a grand and respected sport. John Daly is the closest thing pro golf has to a true "red neck", but even John shows himself to be a regular, down home family guy with a really big heart and the crowds love him. Now that he has signed with MaxFli, look out world.

I went back and watched it on my Tivo, and it didn't seem like the damage was to severe. The guy with the watch kinda pointed out to someone with him that the crystal was maybe it got cracked or dinged, and shrugged his shoulders like it wasn't that big of a deal. Then he checked the grumpled up money and found that it was two C notes. Pretty funny actually. I still give props to Phil. To bad his game started to come unhinged after that.
In my earlier post, I mentioned Daly and his popularity....I forgot about his 4th wife being in jail...oh well...but you have to admit, the vast majority of the tour players seem to have a pretty clean image. I guess Big John has always had his ups and downs, but he sure has a cleaner record than some other sports types. I stilll think Phil's gesture was a nice one. I'm sure the $200 he gave the guy bought Mickelson a lot more good feelings among the fans than ill. It's too bad he couldn't have bought a better finish for the day.

I think I would have asked him to sign it or mark it somehow. That's a piece of sports memoribilia I'd hold onto.
I've always liked the guy and pulled for him... consider him classy, but then, hard to know what someone is really like based on their public persona, the face they put on for the camera.

I have nothing against Phil at all, thogh I'm not a Phil "fan" per se, but I've heard much the same, basically that the hokey, nice-guy stuff is all a load of *&@#.
