OK I know he is very creative and his short game gets so much praise but then why is he 110th on the PGA tour in scrambling? Overated or not? What do you think? .
I'll agree somewhat with what you say. Phil is great on shows like the Golf Channel when they ask him to do trick shots etc.
He has also hit some GREAT SHOTS in tournaments but he hits many a dog as well.
There are many shot games I would put ahead of his for sure.
I agree. Phil's too confident about his ability. Even after so many failures, he still exudes confidence and doesn't take much time executing a flop shot or difficult bunkers shots. Compare that to Tiger, who take a lot of time before executing any flop shots as if he fears it. But he rarely fails to execute it. He respects the difficulty of these short game whereas Phil neglects it with overconfidence.
I know numbers do not always tell the entire story, but Phil has finished inside the top 56 in the PGA TOUR's Sand Saves Pct. category in each of the previous six years before this. He has also finished inside the top 50 in Scrambling in five of those six seasons, with three seasons inside the top 10.
There is no way Phil's short game is overrated. He clearly has one of the best in all of golf. But Phil has, in fact, struggled at times with those crucial 4-5 ft. par-saving putts and his course-management prowess certainly may be questioned. I think he still takes too many unnecessary risks.

I think those 2 factors have really fed the perception in recent years. He definitely has as much talent around the greens as anyone, but I can't ignore his decision-making at times and those shaky 5-footers.
Phil should take out his lob wedge for one round and see how he does. I bet he'll score better. Sergio's a guythat can't putt to save his life but is still 6th in the world

Phil uses his 9-iron, and even his 8, on chips and pitches, more than ever these days. And Sergio really has his putter working right now.
