Everyone laughed when Woosie had two drivers in his bag at the Open, except his caddie.

I'd forgotten about that.

Hope Woosie has a good season this year too.

Phil has, no doubt, been spending time at Augusta looking at the course and how it will play. If he figures there's no sand wedge shot for him, he ought to know - he HAS won there. Maybe he hasn't had to use it at Augusta before.

Augusta is all about being in the right position to put the ball in the right place on the green. So I think his theory is sound. He's obviously trying to set himself up to not NEED a SW.

I think most people use a Lob wedge to get out of sand anyhow these days. Sand wedges mostly are for approach shots to the green than anything else.

Sure they can , but very few like to under the pressure of tournament conditions. They're really not much different in that respect from most good amatuers. They have a natural go-to ball fllight and that's what they stick to. The way Phil is hitting it, if he's making his 4-5 footers he'll be in the thick of it come Sunday.

I think he'd roll down a hill quite nicely... and I wouldn't want to be in his way.

Here's a funny one:

Tiger Woods was asked if he ever carried two drivers.

"Well, one driver in two pieces, but that's about it," he said.

I wonder which driver Phil will use when he needs a straight ball off the tee... on # 7, for example. I think you need to hit it dead straight, through a narrow shoot of trees.

Perhaps a third driver??? haha

7 is only 450 yds, he probably can do quite well without a driver there.

This is true, and Phil is one of them. But each shot requires a different swing.

If you are able to achieve the results with the same swing it would seem to me that you are more likely to not only improve your consistency, but more often avoid slumps or the crucial five or six-hole stretches where one of the swings is letting you down.

I really am almost sure that one driver actually is nutral, to compliment the Draw club, its just his main shot is a fade anyway, so he wouldn't need a fade driver.

Though If he pulled out a 3 wood, on that hole I don't think he'd feel overly penalised.

Either way, still will be interesting to see what he does on the day.

And skill.
Using two clubs to play the same shot a different way seems to be deskilling the process.

It may be that Phil feels happy to have one less wedge, as he is very good with all his others.
But he may want to use Two drivers that he trusts to do a certain flight on the course.

In fact he nearly broke one as he chucked it into a bin.
