i don't think there's a problem with the way retief is. in order to appreciate the personalities of Tiger and co., there have to be steady-eddie characters to maintain a balance. tiger's fist-pump on the 18th would be less electrifying if every other golfer tried to do the same thing. personally, i find it interesting to see retief draw whatever he needs from within himself rather than trying to get the crowd behind him. it's as if he's in his own world when he's out on the course

With your one-eyed TV coverage you can relax - the only time you'll see the Goose on US TV is when he's burning it up!

Talking about decent behaviour on the course, Couples was terrific in adversity. We also didn't see any histrionics from him, just hit the ball on the fairway, knock it on the green, miss the putt and move on. On the other hand Goofy just grinned his way to a win - can't wait to see the smile wiped and soon!

Goosen appears grumpy, but then how often do you smile at work? He has no hsitory of upsetting anyone so leave him alone. He may not have the personality+ of Ernie, but at least he does not have the personality of Sabbatini .

Here! Here! Phil is just too sluggy to be a professional athlete. We need to promote fitness for golfers, not some cart ridin’ couch potatoes!

Its golf and he's #3(?) in the world -and has won 3 of the last 9 majors, and has become a multi-millionaire from the game. Kinda says to me that if you think fitness is so important for this game, you better think again.
Either that or Mick is not in the shape you think he is. It's one or the other.

I've never been a fan of Goosen. he is a little "stiff." But everyone has their own personality. This is what makes the world a better place, individuality. He may be shy, he may have problems socially, who knows. I'm sure he's a kind soul, and that's what matters.

Phil is a cart-riding couch potato? I beg to differ! Maybe Pistol, brianf or someone else who has been there can tell us, but from what I've seen and heard, walking the course at Augusta takes more than just couch-potato fitness. I believe it's a little over 4 miles, with a lot of elevation changes. Now, do that several days in a row, all the while giving us a very solid golf performance.

I'm no great fan of his, but give Phil the respect he has earned. He just came off a very convincing win on another course that's no walk in the park. So he's been playing his best for two weeks straight. He's definitely moved up a notch in my book. He never looked winded, tired, and hardly seemed to break a sweat, even while wearing that long-sleeved black pullover. I suspect he's in a lot better shape than we can tell from just seeing him on TV.

I know that everyone likes Phil… I guess that I just don’t! I think it is that baby face. You just want to slap it! I wouldn’t hesitate to do it… But Retief, that’s a different story. You would have to take him by surprise.

If you want to see Retief get excited, go get Tiger Woods 2006 for PS2 or XBox. The guy's smiling, doing fist pumps and showing emotion. It's amazing.

Seriously, I've heard Ernie Els comment on Retief a couple times, most recently after the 04 Open. Ernie said that he's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet, and he actually (as crazy as this may sound) has an amazing sense of humor and is one to go to the bar after a tournament and have a drink.

I agree with League, Goosen and Campbell have zero personality. What bugs me the most is that "patrons" are paying hundreds of dollars to see them play. The least they can do is acknowledge the applause they get for a routine par... even for a bogey. When the fans clap, even if you are frustrated, a tip of the cap wouldn't hurt.
I seem to remember Goosen tipping his hat many times. And I think people are more interested in good golf then personalities. I'll go to the comedy club if I want to pay to see personalities(or just go to work) . But seriously I know what you mean by very lifeless but that is also one reason why they call Goosen the assassin in the lockerroom.

Goosen is a real competitor, just a little shy, very gentlemen-like off the course. His caddie is a very kind guy as well, giving out water bottles to the fans from the players' water supply coolers during the rounds where not too many spectators are around.

Goosen is a great champion. Phil is one as well. People have different personalities, styles, etc. - and I enjoy seeing these varieties.

No matter how good you are at something athletically if you are in shape you can do it better. Golf is sport where skill counts more than pure athletic ability. Which is why guys like Duffy Waldorf can be successful on the PGA Tour. But what may separate Tiger from Phil is that Tiger has more athletic ability and is in better physical condition. But hey, #3 in the world rankings ain't bad, but #1 is BETTER!

Of course he does.....

Goose is a nice guy. Some people may not like that he isn't "rah-rah", but if you believe Ernie Els, he said Retief is one of the nicest guys you'll meet, and although he's quiet, everyone likes him on Tour.

His demeanor is great example for us all. He doesn't rattled and he has a terrific iron and short game.

I don't think there is really much correlation between "physical fitness" and golfing prowess. One need not look any further than Jack Nicklaus for proof of that. Tiger has that rare combination of God-given talent (he was a legend at 3 years old), drive, work/practice ethic and mental toughness. He's in good shape too, but I don't think that figures greatly in his success. IMO, it's simply a result of his perfectionist nature.
