Favourite Golfer

Sorry if this has been covered recently.

Who is your favourite golfer (dead or alive) and why?

Mine was/is Payne Stewart - his swing was silky smooth and I loved his down to earth no nonsense attitude......if something or somebody was wrong he let everyone know; like when he played with Monty and Monty was being slated by the US galleries......he loved the right things about golf......such a pity he's no longer here.

Anyone who beats Tiger on that day.

Don't get me wrong, Tiger is the best player and maybe ever. I just cannot seem to root for Tiger. He does not seem to have a genuine smile and should be a lot happier than he seems on the course. I'm so bad that I root for USA to win the Ryder Cup every 2 years, but love to see the Euro player give him a run for his point.

Overall, Greg Norman was my favorite player for his charisma and excitement (good and bad).

I hope I am not the only one who feels this way about Tiger. Otherwise, I would have to add another item to my off the wall ideas.

Although he was slightly before my time, I think Byron Nelson ranks right up there for me. He had a GREAT golf game. But in addition, he seemed to have his priorities in order. From what I've read, he left competitive golf almost in his prime, to live a quiet life and spend more quality time with his wife.

And then there is Arnie, who arguably had the largest impact on bringing golf to the general public. I still get a kick out of his competitive spirit.

Fred Couples, cool swing , cool game, except that wretched putting

Ernie Els, love the swing and the touch

Tom Watson, the game, the grin , the history

Tiger , btw to the poster above ... Tiger could careless about Ryder Cup , he would rather be diving in the South Pacific that time of year. Tiger is just to good not to respect and like.

Goosen
VJ

and Im liking this Jonathan Byrd some too , like the swing

would like Phil, but getting sick of him and Greg Norman too. Loved the talent and charisma , but sick of him acting like he is so smart

My favorite player was Jack Nicklaus. He's the greatest player to ever live. As a kid while everyone wanted to be Tiger, I wanted to be Jack.

Fred Couples has always been my favorite. His swing is so effortless and he has such a cool demeaner. Of course his putting blows but that's OK, i just love watching him play. i also like David Toms. He too has a great swing, cool demeaner but he is also so giving of his time to those less fortunate. He's got a great sense of humor and seems like just a regular guy.
As far as tiger goes, he looks so serious on the golf course because he is so when he smiles, it's genuine. He's there to win and he works hard to do so. Tiger too, is incredibly giving to those less fortunate. The $25 million foundation he recently opened in California is the biggest example but he does he free clinics all the time. He's recently married and would like to have a family and he's trying to manage that side of his life as well. Cut 'ole Tiger some slack, he's not a youngster anymore - he's a 10 year tour veteran.

Without questions, my favourite is Ernie Els, and second to him is Colin Montgomerie.

i like Fred Funk. goes to show you don't have to be the biggest guy or the longest hitter to win.

Tiger for his immense ability to zone out and focus on only one thing...playing golf. Many people think he does not make enough time for fans while playing, but how would you like it if someone knocked on your door while you were doing some analysis work on a million dollar portfolio asking you if they can refill the printer cartridges? You don't see fans calling at the outfielders to sign a ball in the middle of an inning. It is easy to attack the best in the world...it's lonely at the top, as we've all heard.

Michael Campbell, cos I'm a Kiwi, and a Wellingtonian for that matter. (Campbell's from my home town.) Always tough to see him play badly, but lots of celebration last year when he won the US Open. Definitely my top golf highlight so far.

Apart from Cambo, Tiger because he is so good, and I learnt to play reading his book. (and then paid heaps in lessons to undo all the bad habits I picked up from it!) Tiger also has a kiwi caddie, who is also from my home town (well, 45 minutes drive north).

Other golfers I like are Ernie Els, because his effortless swing is great to watch and he seem like a genuine sorta guy, and Padraig Harrington, because again, he seems like a good guy and carries some very nice clubs. (Wilson's are underrated).

If any of those four golfers win on the day, I'm happy. Haven't been watching golf long enough to comment on the greats of the past.

Not Canadian or anything, but I really like Mike Weir. A 'true' lefty, has a green jacket, seems to fly under the radar a lot of times despite having won a Masters. Seems like a really nice guy, too.

Like my avatar shows, Els and Goosen are my favorites. I never really cared for them until I saw an interview with both of them 2 years ago after Retief's Open win, and really changed my opinion of them. They're two great guys, and since I've met them both and asked for their autograph, and both were 2 of the nicest guys I've ever met. Very classy. They have a great friendship, and I cheer for both of them everytime.

Also, big fans of Daly and Couples. Tiger is right up there as well as one of my faves.

If I have to pic an "Old School" golfer it would be Ben Hogan. I just love the guy's work ethic, determination and passion for the game.

Of the contemparies I'd go with Tiger. The man can just do some fantastic things on a golf course. When he is on his game he's just the best there is and maybe the best ever.
